All about 'Spook' the Barking Owl or Rupert Ghost as he is affectionately known.

During the first storms of the Broome wet season, Spook was found as a pre fledgling on the ground. He was unable to fly and came into our care on the 5th December 2025 for rehabilitation. Cheered on by a pair of wild Barking Owls frequenting his aviary, saw Spook released back to his home range nine weeks later.
Apologies for the dark part of the video, but it highlights his cheer squad on top of the aviary and Spook also trying out his squeaky woof woof to communicate. (Sound up) He took a while to get his bearings but eventually flew off towards the sound of woof woof nearby. Likely his parents.

A big thank you to Jan and Don for enabling Spook to get a helping hand. We wish Spook a long and healthy life. ๐Ÿฆ‰

A fortunate call out from Sherie at the Town Beach Accommodation Village (old Satay Hut) led to the safe capture of this beautiful Mulga. It was hiding under an outside sofa on the verandah of one of the units. Approximately 2 metres long, excellent condition and a spectacular golden brown colour. It was taken away from human habitation and released at a good location.
Thanks to Sherie for calling it in and her husband Greg for the backup.

An early morning call out at 3am to a house in old Broome resulted in the capture of a 2.5 metre Olive Python. The python was in excellent condition and had been living in the wall cavity of the house. A number of previous attempts were futile due to the python disappearing into a hole in the wall. The python was safely relocated away from human habitation.

It's been raining Tawny Frogmouths for the last couple of months with Broome having a bumper wet season. A lot were getting knocked around by the storms and some by vehicle strikes. Fortunately, they've all recovered and have been released back to their home range.

We'd like to thank Kylie Gibson, Jac Melvin, Martin Shadforth and Luna & Enzo Homann for rescuing and taking the birds to Broome Vet or bringing them to us for care and rehabilitation. You have given these gorgeous birds a second chance.

Apologies that some of the releases are not featured in the clip as it was too dark.

Happy outcome for baby Tawny Frogmouth: Most people want to help a baby bird found on the ground, but we need to stand back and take in all the circumstances and if in doubt, call a wildlife rehabilitator and get advice. The Tawny Frogmouth in the previous post was feathered, could stand and perch and was learning to fly. Ten days after it came in to care it was returned to the location it was found where its worried parents were waiting. Two days later, they were all spotted in a gum tree next to the one that was damaged in the storm. Thank you to Tessa Beechley and Paul Noble for making this possible and helping us avoid human imprinting on the baby bird. Remember the parents will always be nearby and if the baby is feathered, maybe you could put it on a branch off the ground and let the parents do their job or if it's smaller, maybe you could put a makeshift nest in the tree, so parent birds can still feed and care for their growing baby. It should be a last resort to remove them from their home and parents. We welcome your call if you need advice.

This is the sound of a baby Tawny Frogmouth, anxious and calling for its parents. Found on the ground in Derby after a storm and transported to Broome for care. More news to come.

Itโ€™s Wet season and it means our snakes are on the move. If you find a snake on your property or in your home call a snake catcher to come and safely remove it. Not all snakes are harmful so donโ€™t kill it just because it is a snake - most people get bitten when trying to kill snakes.

This beautiful Mulga (King Brown) was safely removed this evening and released back in a safe environment away from human habitation.

Just a reminder - if you are going outside your house at night turn the lights on to prevent standing on snakes that are looking for frogs on your verandah.
