๐ŸŒโœจ Standing Strong for Indigenous Rangers & Protected Areas! โœจ๐ŸŒ

The Kimberley Land Council is proud to join Country Needs People and Indigenous partners across Australia in calling for practical, increased federal funding for Indigenous Rangers and Indigenous Protected Areas (IPAs).

๐Ÿš™๐Ÿ•๏ธ๐Ÿ› ๏ธ Rising costs for vehicles, equipment, accommodation, and staffing are making it harder for our rangers to protect Country and culture.

๐ŸŒฟ๐Ÿฆ˜๐ŸŒŠ We need funding that goes straight to the frontline - supporting rangers and the communities who care for our Country, and sea.

Proud to share that three members of the Fitzroy-Derby Water Working Group โ€“ Carla Davey, Kimberley Bridge and Fiona Smith โ€“ presented at the Australian Institute of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies (AIATSIS) Summit 2026 this week ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿพ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿพ

Presenting on the main stage, in front of a large crowd, they shared the story of the Traditional Owner-led water planning engagement process in the Kimberley. A project facilitated by the KLC, it brings together 19 Prescribed Bodies Corporate and two claim groups to help shape the future of water on their Country.

Through this process, the Working Group developed and delivered 61 recommendations to the WA Government on the Fitzroy-Derby water resource management plan, covering everything from shared decision-making and cultural engagement to Aboriginal Water Holding and stronger monitoring and compliance partnerships.

The draft plan was released in April 2026 and while it includes some positive steps, like confirming no more surface water can be taken or licensed from the river, there's still a long way to go, with the majority of recommendations not yet supported.

Submissions on the draft water plan are open now and close at 5:00pm (WAST) on Tuesday 30 June. Make sure your voice is heard.

โš ๏ธMissing artwork in Broome!โš ๏ธ

This morning we lost a long and narrow cylinder, about 2m long and 10cm diameter, off a trailer between Gregory St Broome and the Roebuck Roadhouse between 9am and 1030am.

It is an unfinished banner made by Kimberley Ranger groups.

The painted side is rolled in so it looks like a roll of blank canvas. It is taped up with masking tape and it has no external wrapping like bubble wrap or cardboard.

If you find it please contact the KLC office 9194 0100 ๐Ÿ“ž

Two Way Science Adventures with the Nyul Nyul Rangers and Sacred Heart School Beagle Bay! ๐Ÿ‘ฃ๐Ÿ”ฌ

Earlier this month, the Nyul Nyul Rangers and the KLC Two Way Science team took the students from Sacred Heart School in Beagle Bay out to check out and learn about fish traps and do some crabbing ๐Ÿฆ€

Students learnt about traditional fishing techniques, caught a few fish and worked together to re-build one of the fish trapโ€™s near the shore ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿพ

Two-way Science is an educational and cultural framework that integrates traditional First Nations ecological knowledge with the school curriculum.

Led by the rangers and guided by elders, the program connects classroom lessons with โ€œon-Countryโ€ learning, increases engagement and helps to ensure connection to culture stays strong โœŠ๐Ÿพ

๐Ÿ“ธThank you to Sacred Heart Beagle Bay for sharing these photos.
