Proud to share that three members of the Fitzroy-Derby Water Working Group โ Carla Davey, Kimberley Bridge and Fiona Smith โ presented at the Australian Institute of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies (AIATSIS) Summit 2026 this week ๐๐พ๐๐พ
Presenting on the main stage, in front of a large crowd, they shared the story of the Traditional Owner-led water planning engagement process in the Kimberley. A project facilitated by the KLC, it brings together 19 Prescribed Bodies Corporate and two claim groups to help shape the future of water on their Country.
Through this process, the Working Group developed and delivered 61 recommendations to the WA Government on the Fitzroy-Derby water resource management plan, covering everything from shared decision-making and cultural engagement to Aboriginal Water Holding and stronger monitoring and compliance partnerships.
The draft plan was released in April 2026 and while it includes some positive steps, like confirming no more surface water can be taken or licensed from the river, there's still a long way to go, with the majority of recommendations not yet supported.
Submissions on the draft water plan are open now and close at 5:00pm (WAST) on Tuesday 30 June. Make sure your voice is heard.
