Could your old car help train the next generation of automotive technicians? 🚗

Federation TAFE’s Automotive Department is looking for vehicles from 2016 onwards to support hands-on student training.

If you have a vehicle you no longer need, or know someone who might be willing to donate one, your contribution could help our students gain valuable experience working with modern automotive technology.

Interested in helping? Get in touch with our Automotive Department on 5362 2656 to find out more.

🏡 Building skills and giving back to the community!

Federation TAFE students have put their skills to work by building a cubby house to help raise funds for families of premature and sick babies.

Students studying Certificate II in Building and Construction and Certificate II in Plumbing at our Horsham campus worked together on the cubby, gaining hands-on experience across every stage of the build.

With paint generously donated by Ballarat-owned Haymes Paint, the cubby was a major prize at the Life’s Little Treasures Foundation’s Ballarat Walk for Prems, supporting the organisation’s vital work with families.

We’re proud of our students, educators and community partners for bringing this project to life!

Federation University's $29.8 billion contribution to Ballarat’s future

For 150 years, Federation University has been part of Ballarat. Independent analysis by SED Advisory highlights the significance of that relationship will continue, estimating that the University will contribute $29.8 billion to the city over the next 25 years.

Federation already supports around 6,208 local jobs and generates $685 million in direct economic benefit for Ballarat each year.

The contribution of Federation graduates who stay and work in Ballarat is expected to deliver $21.6 billion in cumulative value over the next 25 years.
Our impact also extends through the Ballarat Technology Parks at Mt Helen and SMB, which generate an estimated $392 million in direct economic activity annually and support around 1,870 jobs.

The analysis estimates Federation’s contribution is equivalent to around 15 per cent of Ballarat’s current gross regional product, which demonstrates the value of a university that is connected to its community.

Federation University to contribute $4.67 billion to Berwick over the next 25 years

As one of Victoria’s fastest-growing communities, Melbourne’s south-east needs a skilled workforce ready to meet the demands of the future, and Federation University is helping make that happen.

New independent analysis by SED Advisory estimates Federation will contribute $4.67 billion to Berwick and surrounds over the next 25 years, highlighting the long-term value of education in supporting local communities and industries.

Our Berwick campus serves a catchment of around 950,000 people, helping expand access to higher education while preparing graduates for careers in areas where demand is growing.

By 2035, the region is expected to need an additional 46,400 health care workers and 17,200 education and teaching staff. Federation graduates will play an important role in meeting these needs, contributing an estimated $3.94 billion in value to Berwick over the next 25 years.

From creating career pathways to supporting local jobs and businesses, Federation is helping shape a future where the south-east can continue to grow and thrive.

Federation University to contribute $6.35 billion to Gippsland over the next 25 years

New independent analysis highlights the significant role Federation University plays in supporting Gippsland’s economy, workforce and communities, estimating a $6.35 billion contribution to the region over the next 25 years.

The analysis by SED Advisory found Federation supports around 1,270 local jobs and generates $86 million in direct economic benefit for Gippsland each year.

Through educating the next generation of skilled professionals, Federation helps meet workforce needs, with our graduates putting their skills into local communities.

In Gippsland, this graduate pipeline is expected to deliver an estimated $5.4 billion in cumulative value over the next 25 years, helping address growing demand for nurses, teachers and other skilled workers.

Federation is also helping prepare the region for emerging opportunities in renewable energy through our Asia Pacific Renewable Energy Training Centre (APRETC), supporting the skills needed for Gippsland’s future offshore wind industry.

These findings reinforce the importance of regional education in creating opportunities, strengthening local workforces and building thriving communities.

📚 AI is helping Federation students build confidence in maths

More than 2,000 Federation University students have used personalised AI learning tools to strengthen their maths and statistics skills as part of a university pilot.

With AI learning agents now supporting 24 units and courses, students have access to additional help in their own time and at their own pace.

Two of the tools, NINA (Numeracy in Nursing Agent) and EdNA (Education Numeracy Agent), have been developed specifically for nursing and education students.

NINA helps nursing students practise medication calculations, while
EdNA supports education students preparing for the numeracy component of LANTITE.

Federation Lecturer Dr Luis Camacho said the technology is helping create a supportive, low-pressure way for students to work through problems and build confidence.

Early findings show students are using the tools to learn rather than simply find answers, applying what they learn from mistakes to correctly answer questions.

AI isn't replacing existing support. Students continue to have access to help both face-to-face and online from staff and tutors, alongside other learning resources.

The team is now exploring how the approach could be expanded into other areas requiring mathematical skills, including physics and the sciences.
