How’s Ya Mate – Broken Hill Soccer Round
What a great day at the How’s Ya Mate Broken Hill Soccer Round on Sunday, 16 August!

This round is always so well supported by the Broken Hill soccer community, and it was fantastic to see so many people getting behind HYM again this year.

Plenty of HYM merch made its way out into the community too with every shirt, pair of socks and piece of merch helping us spread the HYM message, start conversations around mental health and raise funds to keep the program running within our local community.

At the heart of HYM is a pretty simple message, check in with your mates, have the conversation and genuinely ask, “How’s ya mate?”

A huge thank you to our friends at Tilt Renewables and the Broken Hill soccer community for continuing to support the program. We love being part of this round each year and seeing the conversations it creates both on and off the field.

What a fantastic day for our How’s Ya Mate Round in Burra!

On 1 August, Burra Booborowie Hallett (BBH) and Blyth Snowtown came together for a very special football and netball round, and what a success it was!

It was wonderful to see both clubs getting behind How’s Ya Mate by showing support for mental health and wellbeing within our regional communities. Throughout the day, plenty of people stopped by the HYM stand, asked questions and learnt more about the program. But most importantly, the day sparked conversations about mental health – and that’s exactly what How’s Ya Mate is all about.

The kids had a great time getting involved in the activities, there were plenty of smiles around the ground.

A huge thank you to our friends at Tilt Renewables, BBH and Blyth Snowtown, the players, volunteers, families and supporters who embraced the day and helped make our first HYM Round in the region such a success.

And remember, the conversation doesn’t stop when the round is over. Local support is available through the Lifeline Clare Connect Centre on (08) 8842 2827 or visit them at 1 Blanche St, Clare SA.

Sometimes a simple “How’s ya mate?” can start a conversation that really matters.

🏉 The How’s Ya Mate AFL Round was a huge hit at Jubilee Oval this past weekend!

It was fantastic to see our community come together! Between catching up with mates, face painting, and proudly wearing HYM gear, the team spirit made it a day to remember!

A big thanks to everyone who came out to support our teams and show what outback mateship is all about. This weekend was a great reminder that one conversation can save a life. Our community is ready to check in on their mates, and we’re always here to listen.

Thank you to AFL Broken Hill, our local football clubs, the How’s Ya Mate team and our mates at Tilt Renewables for helping make this round such a success.

🏅 Congratulations Brendan Cullen – Broken Hill Australia Day Sportsperson of the Year

Brendan’s sporting achievements are extraordinary. From elite distance swimming and open water channel crossings to ultra-endurance events, he continues to push himself to new limits — including multiple English Channel swims, the Catalina Channel crossing, and completing a 100km ultra-marathon. His dedication, discipline, and resilience truly embody the spirit of sport.

Brendan has worked very closely with How’s Ya Mate, playing a key role in bringing the initiative to life across local sporting clubs. Through his leadership, advocacy, and genuine care for others, Brendan has helped clubs create safer, more supportive environments where checking in on your mates and talking about mental health is part of the culture.

Using his platform as an athlete, Brendan shows that strength isn’t just about physical endurance — it’s also about connection, compassion, and looking out for one another.

This recognition is so well deserved. Congratulations Brendan, and thank you for everything you do to support sport, mental health, and the How’s Ya Mate community. 💛👏
