Legacy Newcastle

Legacy Newcastle Legacy is a voluntary organisation, caring for families of deceased and incapacitated veterans. Legacy assists over 100,000 widows and 1,900 dependants.

Born out of a promise of mateship in World War 1, after a digger told his dying mate he would look after his wife and kids. Legacy support includes pensions and advocacy entitlements, emergency medical alarms for the frail and elderly, social isolation, medical and financial assistance as well as nurturing children's education by contributing to school fees, books, uniforms and recreational activi

ties and holiday camps. Legacy Australia Chairman Charles Wright said "it doesn't matter if you are 100 years of age or in your twenties, the organisation's role in the community is as real now as it ever has been. We have more than 400 widows over the age of 100 and more than 250 widows under the age of 50 with young children and many thousands in between and the one thing they all have in common is the heartache of losing a loved one, which can last a lifetime". Legacy is dedicated to caring for families of the deceased and incapacitated. we call on Australians to recognise the sacrifice that they have made. As Australia confronts the challenges of modern conflict, soldiers increasingly are returning afflicted by physical and psychological conditions which leave them incapable of carrying out their own affairs. Currently there are around 60,000 service men and women who have served overseas in the past ten years and Legacy is ready to support them and their families.

Wind-back Wednesday
When preparing for our band’s centenary celebration, we decided to produce a book on the band’s history, in doing so, some interesting photos came about through various avenues that not only included images of our band but other bands and gatherings.
This nugget of history was labelled on the reverse ‘New England Pipe Band’

Are you in Year 12 and considering university next year?

If you’re part of the Australian Defence Force Cadets, your service and leadership experience could strengthen your university application.

Many Australian universities now formally recognise leadership, service, resilience, and extracurricular achievement when assessing applicants, and cadet experience may help through adjustment factors or leadership-based admissions pathways.

A few examples:

🎓 University of Newcastle
The Leaders and Performers Adjustment Scheme recognises leadership achievements, with eligible applicants able to receive up to 4 adjustment factors.

🎓 Macquarie University
Macquarie recognises leadership, service, and extracurricular achievement through its admissions pathways, with cadet experience supporting a strong application.

🎓 UNSW
Through the Elite Athletes, Performers and Leaders Program, eligible cadet leadership appointments are recognised for adjustment factors.

The ADF Cadets program develops leadership, teamwork, discipline, initiative, and service values, qualities that universities increasingly acknowledge as valuable beyond academic results alone.

For cadets and families finishing Year 12:

Speak with your Unit Commander or Officer Commanding about documenting leadership appointments, awards, and service contributions, as supporting evidence may be required.

Always check the specific university admissions website or UAC requirements, as criteria and deadlines change each year.

To the young people serving in our cadet programs: the skills you are building now may help open doors well beyond the parade ground.
