COVID-19 may be primarily seen as a respiratory illness; however, it can also have negative effects on cardiac health. For instance, in 2020, doctors discovered that 20-30% of patients admitted to the hospital with COVID-19 experienced heart damage despite having no pre-existing heart conditions.

Professor James Hudson and his team utilized stem cell technology to engineer miniature hearts, enabling them to study the impact of COVID-19 on their 'organoids.'

They concluded that the heart damage was caused by the patient's own immune system, particularly by the severe inflammation that occurs following infection. They identified the signaling pathway responsible and are now screening existing drugs that can help prevent this potentially life-threatening symptom of this terrible diesease.

COVID-19 can be fatal for patients with heart disease. Even patients without heart disease can suffer damage to their heart. Bioengineer Professor James Hudson has found a drug which could protect our hearts from this damage.

Australian company Vaxxas has opened its global headquarters and manufacturing facility in Brisbane’s Northshore. The company specializes in developing needle-free vaccine patches. The facility, supported by the Queensland Government and additional funding from the Commonwealth, aims to scale up Vaxxas' technology platform. It is expected to create up to 200 jobs and produce millions of vaccine patches annually. Vaxxas has currently completed “successful human clinical trials involving more than 500 participants; ongoing Australian Phase I clinical studies for COVID-19 and seasonal influenza” with “other vaccine studies targeting pandemic influenza funded by the United States Government and a measles-rubella study funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, expected to start in 2024”.

Ever wonder about gastrointestinal surgeries? If you do, then I'm sure you already know the importance of sealing sutures post-operation.

For the rest of us, let's say that digestive fluids leaking into the abdominal cavity can be pretty bad. From “triggering peritonitis or even life-threatening blood poisoning” kind of bad (2023 Article below). What makes it worse is that the leakage can be hard to identify early on, before it causes significant damage.

Recently, ETH Zurich and Empa have developed a more durable polymer plaster that can not only seal these potentially dangerous liquids but also absorb and change shape. This allows doctors to better detect these leaks with medical imaging techniques such as ultrasound and CT scans.

If you are interested in finding out more about the recent developments on surgical plasters, check out these articles:

Closing wounds in the digestive tract is a challenge. Empa researchers have now developed a polymer patch for the intestine that can be used to stably bond and seal internal injuries.

Monogram Orthopaedics is a medical technology company that developed a new system for knee replacement surgery by leveraging personalized medicine and AI/Robotics. By combining custom 3D-printed 'push-fit' implants with robotic surgical assistants, the company looks to increase the speed and precision of orthopaedic surgery. They recently demonstrated the current capabilities of their system by performing a real-time remote surgery with impressively little latency, from over 1,700 miles away. Monogram is now in its final round of investment and has completed its first pre-submission meeting with the FDA. For more information, please see the following links:

A recent study released this month found that 22 out of the 25 tested melatonin gummies in America had inaccurate labels, often under-estimating the amount of hormone present in their products. In the most extreme case, one product was found to contain 347% of the melatonin stated on the bottle. This is of concern because the U.S. CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) found a 503% increase in pediatric melatonin ingestion calls between 2012 and 2021. With about 94.3% of those ingestions are found as accidental overdosing by parents. Although here in Australia you require a prescription for melatonin if you are under 55s, you should exercise extra care when sharing some of these supplements with your kids.

A new study found that gummies often contain more of the hormone than is listed on the label.
