A proud moment for GACCQ 🇩🇪🇦🇺

was honoured with a Certificate of Appreciation at the 2026 Celebrating Multicultural Communities Reception at Queensland Parliament House, recognising the contribution of Queensland’s multicultural communities.

Our President, Claudia Lüttringhaus, received the recognition on behalf of GACCQ alongside Premier David Crisafulli MP and Minister for Multiculturalism Hon Fiona Simpson MP.

For an organisation shaped over more than 20 years by the dedication of its volunteers, members and supporters, this recognition means a great deal. It belongs to everyone who has helped build and sustain GACCQ and Queensland’s German over the years.

A wonderful acknowledgement of that legacy, and encouragement for what comes next.

Supporting German Community. Culture. Language.

What do you find when you walk into Brisbane City Hall on an ordinary Sunday? Apparently, the world! 🌏

That’s certainly how it felt at Empowering People, Strengthening Queensland 2026, where communities and cultures from across came together under one roof.

was proud to represent the and showcase three of our best-loved traditions: , and . 🎭🥨🎄

One of our favourite moments was meeting Germans who hadn’t even known the event was on. They simply happened to be in , wandered in and suddenly found themselves surrounded by cultures from around the world - including a little piece of home. “We had no idea this was on - this is really cool!”

And perhaps that’s exactly what made the day so special. It wasn’t only about showcasing our own culture. It was about discovering others, starting conversations and making connections.

A big thank you to the organisers for bringing so many of Queensland’s communities together, and to everyone who stopped by the German Culture stand to say Hallo! 🇩🇪🇦🇺

Community. Culture. Language.

A tiny sleeping animal, an ancient legend, and a German weather rule all have one thing in common... the 27 June. 🇩🇪🌤️

Today is Siebenschläfertag in Germany, one of those wonderfully unique traditions where language, folklore, nature and weather all come together.

The word Siebenschläfer has three fascinating meanings:

🐭 A tiny hibernating animal
The Siebenschläfer is the edible dormouse, a small nocturnal rodent famous for sleeping through more than seven months of the year.

⛪ An ancient legend
The name goes back to the legend of the Seven Sleepers of Ephesus, seven young men who, according to tradition, sought refuge in a cave and awoke centuries later.

🌦️ A weather saying
For centuries, German farmers have believed that the weather around Siebenschläfertag predicts the following seven weeks of summer.

"Das Wetter am Siebenschläfertag noch sieben Wochen bleiben mag."
"The weather on Seven Sleepers' Day may remain the same for the next seven weeks."

Interestingly, modern meteorologists have found that this old farmers' rule has around a 60 to 70% success rate in parts of southern Germany, as European weather patterns often settle into longer phases around the beginning of July.

This weekend, is experiencing an exceptional heatwave, with temperatures forecast to exceed 40°C in some regions. Unsurprisingly, the old Siebenschläfer saying is once again attracting plenty of attention.
Folklore? Coincidence? Or perhaps a little weather wisdom?

Either way, it is a wonderful example of how German culture keeps centuries old stories alive in everyday life.

🇩🇪 Did you grow up with the saying? Or are there any German weather sayings your Oma and Opa used to swear by? We'd love to hear them in the comments!

Our dialects? Oh, many! Nothing could be as uncomplicated as the personal pronoun "I"? Well that depends...
