No Pressure - Hydro Awareness

No Pressure - Hydro Awareness We change minds and futures, raising voices and creating change to relieve the pressure on those living with hydrocephalus.

No Pressure is raising the lid on a little-known condition called Hydro. We believe that we all have the power to release the pressure for thousands of Australians living with hydro because quite frankly, a better way is well within our grasp. It’s not like we’re trying to find a cure for cancer here. So, we’re raising our voices so the voices of those living with hydro can not only be heard, but

counted on a national shunt register. This register has the ability to change lives — with it, we are one step closer to a breakthrough. A breakthrough that helps not just the people living with hydro, but the people that love them too. And we’re doing this by bursting into the lives of Australians. We’re all about giving everyone the chance to be part of something truly rewarding. But because we’re also a little bit cheeky, you can expect that doing good with us is doing things a little differently. Expect to be challenged, expect to have fun, but most of all, expect to share — in the experience and with others. Join with us, and the team of underdogs working relentlessly behind the scenes, as we break away from the pack to find that breakthrough. Have the courage to fight for something better for someone else, because we think that takes real courage, and courage is contagious — in a good way. No Pressure… but it’s time you found your inner courage.

General information

Hydrocephalus is an excessive accumulation of Cerebrospinal Fluid (CSF) in the ventricles inside the brain. CSF has many functions including providing protection against injury, delivering vital nutrients to the brain, and carrying waste away from surrounding tissues. Hydrocephalus is an imbalance between the rate of the CSF being produced and absorbed. This causes the ventricles to enlarge and pressure to build. Symptoms of hydrocephalus can vary based on age. For infants, the most common sign is abnormal enlargement of the head. As life progresses, symptoms are generally linked to pressure and may include headaches, nausea, vomiting, and impaired vision. In mature cases, untreated hydrocephalus can cause cognitive difficulties, loss of coordination, and incontinence. It is easy to oversee the risks associated with Hydrocephalus when things are going smoothly for both the individual and their loved ones. At present, all treatment options require brain surgery. The most common treatment method is shunting. Shunts are used to control pressure by draining excess CSF to other parts of the body where it can be absorbed. However, it is common for shunts to malfunction without warning. Approximately 50% of shunts fail within two years of placement and repeated neurosurgical operations are often required. Symptoms develop rapidly and often mimic those of untreated hydrocephalus. Shunt failures or infections have the potential to result in brain damage, coma, or even death. No Pressure is proudly supported by Hydrocephalus Support Association.
