Unfortunately, our community faces exclusion in many aspects of society. This extends to the workplace, where according to Diversity Council Australia in their 2024 Disability Data at Work report, 35% of people with disabilities are left out or excluded during social gatherings at work. This has a huge impact on one's sense of belonging, morale and participation, and ultimately diminishes how teams work together.

Resources like the WWDA Leadership and Mentoring Toolkit offer practical guidance for fostering inclusive spaces and empowering people with disabilities to participate and lead. This toolkit provides strategies to enhance workplace inclusivity, from mentoring to team-building approaches - together, we can create workplaces where everyone can thrive and participate in all aspects of professional and social life.

Deep brain stimulation (DBS) is used to treat the tremors and stiffness of Parkinson’s disease, and more recently has been used for managing seizures. This is a very recent treatment option for people with drug resistant epilepsy in Australia (and is not yet funded by Medicare).

DBS is a technique where a wire is placed permanently in the brain which receives electrical pulses from a pacemaker-like device implanted in the chest. For many people, DBS doesn’t completely stop the seizures, but it can significantly reduce them.

The Government has released its official response to the report on the purpose, intent and adequacy of the Disability Support Pension (DSP). People with Disability Australia (PWDA), ACOSS and disability advocacy organisations including Women With Disabilities Australia (WWDA) have expressed alarm at the Government’s dismissal of the report’s recommendations and called for urgent action to address barriers to accessing the DSP, the risk of poverty for recipients and to reform how eligibility is assessed and avenues for dispute resolution.
