The stolen generations has never stopped. I grew up in community where my people continue to be disproportionately impacted by the law. Where state surveillance is all too common.

The system does not expect people like me to survive, to speak up and out, but the moment we choose silence in our freedom, we are forgetting the duty we have to those who are still silenced. There is power in coming together, and there is a world where we can be better.

It’s been 15 years since the national apology. We must bring our children home

In an award winning essay, journalist Amy McQuire says we don't know how many Aboriginal women have gone 'missing' in Australia and that the very word 'missing' denies the violence black women have been subject to. McQuire says there is a comfort that comes with the word 'missing', because it implies that perhaps they have left on their own accord.

This week, Kevin focuses on the gendered dimensions of colonial violence through a deep and wide-ranging conversation with Darumbal and South Sea Islander journalist and academic Amy McQuire.

In this episode, Kevin and Amy talk about the intersections of gender, race, class, and violence in the colony, and the specific ways that violence against Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women is represented and erased by the mainstream media. Together, they work to uncover and understand how the state disappears racial and gendered violence and the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women and gender diverse people who are subjected to it.

Tune into Let’s Talk…social justice with Kevin Yow Yeh for the third episode in a five-part series on state-sanctioned colonial violence. This week, Kevin focuses on the gendered dimensions of…

Her partner, with whom she has a three-year-old girl, said Ms Lowe repeatedly told him during phone calls in the lead up to her death she was having health issues.

Carrum Mourambine said Ms Lowe told him she was struggling to speak, coughing up blood, experiencing breathing issues and was in a lot of pain.

"She was always crying, ... just crying to me and saying Carrum, 'I can't speak'.

"I couldn't hear her over the phone.

"Then she got the migraines."

Mr Mourambine said his partner repeatedly claimed she was not being listened to by staff.

"She was told it was all in her head," Mr Mourambine said.

He last spoke to Ms Lowe on December 21.

"She rang me that Wednesday morning and told me that she had migraines," he said.

"I was so happy that I told her I loved her before I hung up. I didn't know that was going to be my last call."

The heartbroken family of a young woman who died in custody are trying to piece together what happened and say questions must be answered about her medical care in the lead up to her death.
