We are so excited to be 2-weeks into our 8-week Intensive program for Veterans in Darwin at RSPCA Northern Territory!
Led by our amazing Program Trainer, Margaret and supported by one of our incredible volunteers, Lyn, this group is already getting hands-on with meaningful animal training.
One of their first practical exercises has been mark and reward "at-wire", a training technique where the participants engage safely and positively through the wire of a dog's kennel by marking moments of positive behaviour with cues and treats.
For the participants, they are learning patience and how to give shelter animals the time and space to build trust. In return, even 10 minutes can create a remarkable shift—from a shy or nervous animal to one that is beginning to engage, connect and show confidence, all which positively impacts their adoptability.
Each interaction can create powerful bonds and leaves a lasting impact for both participant and animal. Not only that, but our participants are also building connection with like-minded people in their community.
A big thank you to the Northern Territory Government Veteran Community Grant 2026 for generously funding another round of this program for Happy Paws Happy Hearts in Darwin, making this opportunity for Veterans in the region to join at no cost.
Six weeks to go…let’s see what these incredible people and paws can achieve! 🐾
