🌈 Shining pride with uni in Gurambilbarra Townsville! 🌈

This week, our Gayawur Rainbow team and amazing volunteers joined the JCU: James Cook University, Australia Campus Pride Month event, and what a day it was!

John, Nina and Riley proudly represented 2Spirits and QC, connecting with an incredible number of students and visitors. Our stall was buzzing all day, with people lining up to yarn, learn, and engage with our team.

We’re grateful to JCU staff and students for such a warm welcome, we’ve received wonderful feedback about how much our presence meant on the day πŸ’›

From meaningful conversations to every single resource finding a new home, this event truly showcased the strength of community connection in Gurambilbarra.

Here’s to a powerful and pride-filled month ahead! πŸ–€πŸ’›β€οΈπŸ’šπŸ’™πŸ’œ

Today, June 5, is HIV Long-Term Survivors Awareness Day.

We honour the resilience, strength, and leadership of people living long-term with HIV, trailblazers whose lived experiences continue to shape advocacy, care, and community.

As long-term survivors age, it’s vital they are not only seen, supported, and celebrated, but also cared for through systems that are inclusive, responsive, and grounded in dignity.
We reflect on our roots at 2Spirits and the Queensland Council for LGBTI Health, alongside the many individuals and communities who have stood strong in solidarity with people living with HIV, through every challenge and milestone.

At a time in our collective story where we face new issues and ways of working for our communities, we remember those lessons that long term survivors of HIV continue to share with us, and inspire us by, to remain committed and willing to do the work that is needed.

On 3 June, we honour Mer Island man Eddie Koiki Mabo, whose fight for land justice led to the landmark 1992 High Court decision that overturned terra nullius, the false claim that this land belonged to no one before colonisation.

Eddie Mabo challenged a colonial system that denied Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples their rights, laws, and enduring connection to Country.

His courage and persistence changed the course of Australian history, paving the way for the recognition of Native Title through the Native Title Act 1993.

Although Eddie Mabo passed away just months before the decision was handed down, his legacy lives on. It marked a turning point, but the impacts of colonisation continue to be felt, and the work of truth-telling, justice, and recognition remains ongoing.

Today, we remember Eddie Mabo’s strength and vision, and we recommit to honouring his legacy, not just today, but every day.

🌈 Pride Month is here, Queensland 🌈
June is International Pride Month, a time to celebrate love, diversity, and the strength of our LGBTIQA+ Sistergirl and Brotherboy communities everywhere.

From all of us at 2Spirits and QC, we recognise that pride matters in every community, not just in the big cities. Visibility, inclusion, and celebration belong in every corner of Queensland, because everyone deserves to feel seen, safe, and proud of who they are. β€οΈπŸ§‘πŸ’›πŸ’šπŸ’™πŸ’œπŸ€ŽπŸ–€πŸ€πŸ©΅πŸ©·

That’s why it’s so powerful to see Queensland Country Bank Stadium in Gurambilbarra Townsville shining brightly once again for Pride Month. 🏟️

This incredible display of colour is more than just a light show, it’s a statement of support for regional communities and a reminder that pride lives everywhere.

Thank you for continuing to celebrate in such a vibrant and meaningful way 🌈
Whoever you are, wherever you are, be seen, be heard, be proud.

Today, on May 26, National Sorry Day, we pause to honour the strength, resilience, and survival of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, especially Stolen Generations survivors, their families, and communities.

National Sorry Day marks 29 years since the Bringing them home report shared the truth of the forced removal of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children and the ongoing impacts that continue to be felt today.

This year’s theme, β€œFrom Sorry to Action,” reminds us that acknowledgement alone is not enough. Truth-telling must be followed by meaningful action, accountability, healing, and justice.

We recognise that many survivors are still fighting for access to records, culturally secure aged care, proper redress, and long-overdue support. As we approach 30 years since the Bringing them home report in 2027, the call for action has never been more urgent.
At 2Spirits & QC, we stand alongside Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, including LGBTIQA+ Sistergirl and Brotherboy people. We remain committed to creating inclusive, culturally secure spaces where all identities, stories, and experiences are respected and valued.

Reconciliation is an ongoing journey, one that requires listening, learning, advocacy, and action from all of us. Together, we continue to walk forward with truth, solidarity, and respect.
