📍What does it take to build a strong and sustainable LGBTQIA+ sector in a region as diverse and geographically spread as Central Queensland?

💬It starts with coming together.

💬The Queensland LGBTQIA+ Alliance recently visited CQ to connect with local LGBTQIA+ groups, services and community members and support the establishment of the region’s first CQ LGBTQIA+ Community of Practice.

💬The conversation centred on building local leadership, sharing knowledge, capacity building and lived experience, strengthening connections between organisations and communities, and creating pathways for collaboration, advocacy and support.

💬The proposed purpose and governance of the CQ LGBTQIA+ Community of Practice were co-developed by those in the room, putting local knowledge and leadership at the centre of the work.

💬We’re proud to support this emerging community of practice and the local people and organisations helping shape what comes next.

This week, our CEO, Rebecca Johnson OAM, represented the Queensland LGBTQIA+ Alliance in Far North Queensland, strengthening relationships with government, community and sector partners to advance outcomes for LGBTQIA+ communities across rural, regional and remote Queensland.

A key engagement included contributing to the Parliamentary Inquiry into racism, hate and violence directed at Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people alongside Julie Howles, CEO and Principal Solicitor of the LGBTI Legal Service—one of the Alliance’s valued member organisations. This collaboration reflects the importance of working together to inform policy, strengthen legal protections and promote equitable outcomes for LGBTQIA+ Queenslanders.

Rebecca also attended the North Queensland Rural and Remote Sexual Health Forum, engaging with stakeholders to support inclusive, evidence-informed approaches to health and wellbeing across the region.

As Queensland’s peak body for LGBTQIA+ communities, the Alliance continues to work in partnership with our members, government and community stakeholders to champion inclusion, influence policy and improve outcomes for LGBTQIA+ people across the state.

📢 Funding Opportunity | Safe Futures Grants

Applications are now open for the Queensland Government's Safe Futures Grants Program, supporting community-led initiatives that help prevent domestic, family and sexual violence before it begins.

The program supports community organisations to address the drivers of domestic, family and sexual violence by shifting behaviours and attitudes that foster violence, and creating safer homes and communities for all Queenslanders.

Funding is available across two grant rounds:

Scoping Grants – Up to $30,000 to support community engagement, relationship building and capacity-building activities to identify local needs and prepare an application for a Delivery Grant. Applications are now open and close on 14 August 2026.

Delivery Grants – Up to $600,000 to design, deliver and evaluate community-led primary prevention initiatives. Applications open in January 2027, and organisations do not need to receive a Scoping Grant to be eligible to apply.
