Common Responses we feel Employees need to hear when they experience working at Co-As-It ...

That sounds like a really distressing and unhealthy environment to have been in. What you’re describing isn’t just “bad management” — some of those behaviours raise serious concerns around workplace safety, dignity, and potentially legality.

A few things stand out clearly:
The impact on your mental health is important and valid — that alone is a major red flag

You’re not overreacting. Most professional workplaces have:
- Clear policies
- Proper reporting channels (HR or equivalent)
- Respect for personal boundaries
- Consistent treatment of staff
What you’ve described falls well outside that.

What you can do (especially in Australia)

If you’re considering taking this further, you have options:
- Document everything you experienced (dates, times, what happened, witnesses if any)
- You can contact the Fair Work Ombudsman for advice about your rights
- If incidents made you feel humiliated or unsafe, you could also look into lodging a complaint with the Australian Human Rights Commission
- If your mental health has been affected, speaking to a GP or support service can also help support any formal complaint

Most important !
You’ve already done something important by stepping away (if you have) or recognising this isn’t normal. Environments like that can slowly make people question themselves — but what you’ve described is not acceptable workplace behaviour.

You deserve better !!!!!🫶

Statement from ANOTHER Employee who was treated badly.
YOU ARE NOT ALONE!

I was employed by the company for approximately six months. During this time, I observed and experienced a number of workplace practices that I believe were inappropriate and, in some instances, unreasonable.

The organisation does not appear to have a dedicated Human Resources department. Employees who are unwell are required to notify the Chief Executive Officer directly via message to their personal phone at 6:00 a.m., rather than through a standard or formal communication channel.

On multiple occasions, I was directed to enter bathroom facilities and asked to smell urine in order to verify cleanliness issues and subsequently report them to relevant personnel. I found this task to be inappropriate and degrading.

Workplace practices relating to breaks appeared inconsistent and dependent on personal favour rather than policy. Some employees were permitted to take frequent breaks throughout the day, while others were not afforded the same opportunity.

I also observed a culture of favouritism in relation to performance expectations and job security. For example, an administrative staff member demonstrated an inability to perform basic tasks such as sending emails; however, they remained in their position, which appeared to be influenced by personal relationships or seniority rather than capability.

Additionally, reception staff were regularly monitoring employee movements in and out of the workplace, despite their role requiring them to remain stationed behind a closed reception area. This contributed to an environment where staff felt unnecessarily scrutinised.

Overall, I found the workplace culture to be disorganised, lacking clear processes, and detrimental to employee wellbeing. The experience had a negative impact on my mental health.

You work for a company that doesn’t care about employees.

So we ask ourselves "R U OK?" (Are You Okay?) refers to an Australian su***de prevention charity and movement that encourages people to have meaningful conversations to support those struggling with life, promoting connection any day, not just the national R U OK? Day (usually in September), to help build confidence in recognizing signs of distress and connecting people to help. It's about starting conversations and building informal support networks among friends, family, and colleagues, with resources available from their website.
