A short but meaningful visit to Mithra in Chennai 🇮🇳

Recently, President of Friends of Mithra, Nick Lux, and Committee Member Helen Mahoney travelled to Chennai to spend time with the Mithra community.

From reconnecting with the children and the Servite Sisters, to a walk along Marina Beach and time spent at Prema Vasam, it was a visit filled with connection and shared purpose.

During their time at Mithra, they also supported planning for ongoing upgrades to improve the facilities during the school holidays.

Students from the Hindustan Institute of Technology and Science participating in Christmas celebrations with the children, staff and Sisters at Mithra. We thank Dr Prashanth Rajendran for liaising with Mithra to enable his students to help those at Mithra enjoy a wonderful day.

Presently there are about 200 students studying at the Institute in various Allied Health Sciences, and this was a great opportunity for them to also participate in the school activities at Mithra. We gratefully thank Dr Rajendran and the IRED Hospital for making this possible.

Devoted celebration to the memory of Sr Mary Theodore from all at Mithra on the anniversary of Sister’s birthday and of her death.

All gathered as her tomb at Mithra was blessed by Father Michael John followed by Mass in the Church afterwards.

The Sisters and children arranged the floral tribute on her tomb as a way of showing their deep appreciation and thanks for all that she did for them at Mithra.

It was great to finally meet the amazing Rose Bartlett and her dad, Stewart, in Brisbane recently!

Rose's Daisy and Doug’s Doggie Company in Adelaide has grown from an idea that started out as a high school community project and evolved into a busy social enterprise.

Rose donates a percentage of her profits to Friends of Mithra to be used to support the Mithra school in Chennai.

Friends of Mithra are deeply grateful to Rose for her wonderful support and kindness in helping us to help the children at Mithra.

St Rita's College in Brisbane hosted a rescheduled International Women’s Day Soirée and Schools Networking Evening on Thursday 8 May. The event was originally planned for March but was postponed due to Cyclone Alfred’s impact on the region.

Eight Catholic schools from across Greater Brisbane were represented, with 70 senior students attending. The theme for the evening was Justice, with a particular focus on how justice is lived and experienced through Mithra.

Mrs Helen Mahoney OAM, representing Friends of Mithra, spoke passionately about the three pillars of justice – appreciation, love, and kindness – and how these values are embedded in everything Mithra does.

The students showed strong engagement and interest, with many asking for more information about Mithra and how they might volunteer after completing school. It was a powerful and inspiring afternoon – a testament to the compassion and leadership emerging from our Australian schools.

A recent, very generous donation from St Rita's College in Brisbane was put towards a day at the beach for many of the children, Sisters, and staff at Mithra. For many, this was the first time they had seen the ocean and stood at the edge to feel the surf.

The Mithra Sisters informed Friends of Mithra that there were loud shrieks of delight when they first saw the ocean and felt the sand under their feet. As part of the donation, the Sisters were able to buy ice creams for everyone on the day, which only added to the enjoyment.

Thank you, St Rita’s!!

It was the birthday of Sr Mary Theodore, Founder of Mithra, on 6th December and the anniversary of her death on 7th December.

These beautiful photos show the love and care taken of her tomb at Mithra as they all celebrated her life and her legacy. A special Mass was also held for the Sisters, staff and children at Mithra.
