What an amazing few weeks of sport for Brisbane and the world!

The Women's FIFA World Cup in Australia has defied expectations and smashed key performance indicators across crowd numbers, ticket sales and television viewership across the world.

Some key stats:
⚽ Stadium attendance - 1,977,824 fans attended stadiums across the 64 matches. 75,784 people attended last nights final in Sydney - a record home audience for a women's football match in Australia and the third largest in Women's World Cup history

⚽ Standout viewership - The Matildas’ semi final against England reached 11.15 million Australians nationally, with a national average audience on Seven and 7plus of 7.13 million, making it the most watched TV program since the OzTAM audience measurement system started in 2001.

⚽ Tourism - Tourism Australia estimates the 35-match tournament to have an economic benefit worth $385 million.

Let this serve as yet another example of Australia and New Zealand's sports hosting abilities (and Brisbane's) and act as another globally defining event in Australia, until another one takes place, the 2032 Brisbane Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Simon Hewett, Director of Music for Queensland Youth Orchestras, reveals Brisbane’s great untold story in a new episode of our Dream Boldly podcast series.

After spending 20 years with some of Europe’s leading opera and ballet companies, Simon returned home to Brisbane to help build the city’s greater potential as a dominant force in the Pacific region.

“I think we [Brisbane] really have the potential to be a global leader in music education and orchestral training. In fact we already are, we perhaps just need to advocate a little bit more than we’ve done in the past,” Simon said.

We were honoured to have Brisbane 2032 Organising Committee CEO Cindy Hook join us as a special guest presenter at our recent Advisory Council planning day.

At the planning day, Advisory Council members were joined by the Management Committee to hear presentations from four guest speakers before considering the challenges and opportunities for Brisbane.

We were also joined by Dr Stefan Hajkowicz, Senior Principal Scientist – Strategy and Foresight at CSIRO, Matthew Mackey, Executive Director of Cost & Commercial at Arcadis and Scott Smith, CEO of the Council of Mayors (SEQ).

The primary takeouts for the Committee’s attention included:
- The need to agitate (with others) for a better and clearer response to the critical transport and connectivity infrastructure needs of south east Queensland

- Instituting a comprehensive approach to the resourcing (and scheduling) of the significant capital works programs across south east Queensland, including Games-related infrastructure, the State’s hospital capital works program, the SEQ City Deal opportunities and more.
