The Bald Hills Memorial Hall committee is very proud of Paul, and all those who volunteer their time for the greater community. Thank you to all the volunteers, far and wide, for providing your time and effort to help others!

Some people are just woven into the fabric of their community. Paul Lucas is one of those people.

Paul is President of the Bald Hills Memorial Hall Committee, a role he has poured his heart into for many years. Built in 1920 to honour the soldiers of Bald Hills who served in World War I, the Hall is a treasured piece of our community's history. When fire devastated the building in November 2015, Paul rolled up his sleeves and led the charge to rebuild and restore it for future generations.

But Paul's contribution doesn't stop there. He also volunteers at Sandgate Home Assist Secure and gives his time as a Court Network supporter at the Brisbane Magistrates Domestic Violence Court.

Paul doesn't do things by halves. When he commits to something, he is all in. And for someone who gives so much, he is remarkably quick to shine the spotlight on others rather than himself.

Paul, thank you for everything you do to preserve our history and support our community. πŸ™

Today, Tuesday 12 May, the project kicked off to replace the aging amenities block on the site of the Bald Hills Memorial Hall. The Hall Committee has appointed builder Dee Gee Group to build modern accessible facilities, funded by a grant from the Queensland Government.
Safety fencing is now in place, and demolition has commenced. The builder will be providing PortaLoo amenities for hall users while the build process is undertaken.
As the build progresses, we will keep the Bald Hills community informed. Initial estimates are that the build will take approximately 6 months.
Thanks to everyone for your support and we look forward to delivering these updated amenities for the community later this year.

Today, the Bald Hills Memorial Hall Committee was pleased to welcome the Honourable Amanda Camm, Minister for Families, Seniors and Disability Services and Minister for Child Safety and the Prevention of Domestic and Family Violence.

We appreciated the opportunity to meet with the Minister and discuss the funding support for our new amenities, recently approved as part of the State Government’s pre-election commitments. This investment is an important step in ensuring the hall continues to serve our community for years to come.

Committee members had the chance to show the Minister through our heritage-listed hall, sharing its history and significance, as well as providing an update on the planned upgrades and progress of works that will improve the amenities.

We thank the Minister for taking the time to visit and engage with our community, and we look forward to seeing these improvements come to life.

It's very special to see all the next generation wearing the medals of their family. Thanks to Lucas for participating in the parade, proudly wearing the medals of his great grandfather, who was in the first British SAS during WWII.

An event of this size could not be done without so many in the community, so thank you to all who participated and attended as well. It proves that the ANZAC spirit is alive and well, given the hundreds of people who turned out, even in the rain, to pay their respects.
Finally, a big thank you to all the Bald Hills Memorial Hall Committee who arrived early to help set up and stayed behind to clean up, as well as the members of the public who assisted in the tidy up too. 🫢

🌿 A Little Help Needed to Care for a Community Treasure 🌿

Bald Hills Memorial Hall has been part of our community for generationsβ€”a place filled with memories, connection, and history.

In 2015, it was nearly lost to fire. Thanks to one incredibly dedicated, community-minded person supported by the committee who worked tirelessly to secure funding, the hall was saved. Today, that same spirit continues, with ongoing efforts to improve the hall, including plans for a new toilet block.

But we need a little help…

We’re a small committee doing our best on a very tight budget, and we’re looking for someone willing to help with mowing and general upkeep to keep the grounds looking beautiful. We’re happy to cover any costs involvedβ€”what we really need is your time and a bit of community spirit.

If you could lend a hand, even occasionally, it would mean so much in helping us keep this special place alive for future generations.

Proposed new toilet facilities for the Bald Hills Memorial Hall grounds

As an outcome from the May 2024 Queensland State elections, a commitment was given by local candidate Amanda Cooper on behalf of the current Premier of Queensland David Crisafulli, for a $300,000 grant to replace our existing toilet facilities with modern facilities.

Since that time and following the necessary administrative processes, our committee has worked diligently towards making the necessary funding applications to have that commitment confirmed. On 18 February 2026 our committee finally received confirmation of the $300,000 commitment by the current government for the demolition and rebuild of those facilities.

We are now waiting for the formal Funding Agreement documents to be finalised, which will allow the committee to move forward with discussions with our builder who is a local.

Due to the fact our hall is heritage listed, any new toilet rebuild must not detract from the hall itself and we have been able to reach agreement with the Brisbane City Council Heritage office as to an appropriate design. We are hoping that by the end of 2026 we will be substantially progressed towards having the new facility in place.

Our committee has been working for many years to have the existing toilet facilities replaced as they no longer meet current standards for such amenities.

We are extremely pleased that we will be able to provide much improved amenities for our hall users and this will hopefully encourage more members of the community to rent the hall for functions.

It is important that members of the community understand that our committee comprises all volunteers and we must continually raise all funds to operate and maintain the hall for community use. We are extremely fortunate that we are able to apply for grants from time to time to help us provide the hall that you see today. Particularly so, given the devastating fire we had in 2015 which resulted in a major rebuild of the hall reopening in late 2017.

As the project for the new toilet facilities moves forward, I will keep you informed of our progress.
