Today we pause to remember the courage, sacrifice, and service of our Australian Defence Force members — past and present.
We honour those who gave their lives for the freedoms we cherish, including those impacted and lost to silent wounds through the course of duty.

The Flannel Project began with one story. Shan’s.

She was 29. A veteran. A friend. And last year, we lost her to su***de. Her death left a hole that can never be filled. But Shan’s story is not hers alone. It represents more than 1,600 veterans lost since 1997, and the families left carrying that grief.

Right now, there is no national day to recognise these lives or give families a place to honour them. Flannel Flower Day on June 21 would change that. A day of remembrance, reflection and support for the survivors who are so often forgotten.

We need 20,000 signatures to make this real. Please sign and share the petition. Every name matters.

The Royal Commission into Defence and Veteran Su***de delivered its Final Report in 2024. It was meant to be a turning point but since then, 96 more veterans have died by su***de.

That brings the total to more than 1,600 lives lost since 1997, leaving over 216,000 families grieving.

Australia honours service and sacrifice in many ways, but there is no national day to recognise veterans lost to su***de or to support their families. Flannel Flower Day can change that.

We need 20,000 signatures to make June 21 a National Day of Remembrance. Every signature matters.

Today ABC confirmed what too many of us already know: this crisis isn’t slowing down. Behind every number is a name, a family, a story.

That’s why we’re fighting for Flannel Flower Day, 21 June, the winter solstice. A day for all of Australia to stop, remember, and say their names. 🌸

🌸 Flannel Flower Day Petition — Please Sign & Share 🌸

Since 1997, more than 1,600 Australian veterans have died by su***de. And since the Royal Commission’s Final Report last year, another 96 lives have been lost.

Families are left grieving in silence, with no official day to honour their loved ones.

We’re calling for Flannel Flower Day — June 21st, the winter solstice — to be recognised as a national day of remembrance for veterans lost to su***de. A day that symbolises the journey from darkness into light. A day to give families somewhere to place their grief, and for Australia to acknowledge the true cost of service.

🌼 Why the flannel flower?
The flannel flower is Australia’s national flower for mental health. It grows in harsh conditions yet remains soft and gentle — a symbol of resilience, healing, and hope. Just like our veterans and the families left behind.

We’re in the early stages of creating a peaceful memorial garden in Brisbane to honour veterans lost to su***de a space for healing, reflection and community connection.

More than a memorial, this garden will also help educate young people about mental health, resilience, and the power of compassion.

Most people know what prevention is. But fewer know about postvention. It’s what happens after a su***de and it matters just as much.

At The Flannel Project, postvention is where we begin. It’s not just about grief. It’s about giving people something solid to hold onto in the days when everything feels like it’s falling apart. GP visits. Counselling. Help around the house. Connection. Care. Given freely, when it’s needed most.

Because no one should have to walk this path alone. Learn more at theflannelproject.com or share this post with someone who might need it.

We’re so proud to launch the SOS Flannel Card is a quiet, powerful way to show up for those grieving a veteran lost to su***de.

It’s practical, immediate support that’s freely given to those that otherwise would have to go without. Because everyone deserves help after loss, especially when support feels out of reach.

If you know someone carrying this kind of grief, please share this with them. Learn more or start a conversation with us today via our website, link in bio.

Every 10th of the month join us in the 10 before 10 challenge. Walk 10,000 steps before 10am on the 10th of the month to support to the veterans we’ve lost to su***de. Donate $10 in the link in bio.

All funds raised from the 10 Before 10 walking event go directly towards supporting survivors of veteran su***de through The Flannel Project’s SOS Flannel Card. Each card is valued at $1,000 and provides access to practical and emotional support like trauma counselling, GP visits, supermarket and pharmacy vouchers, and daily task assistance during their most vulnerable time.
