Queensland Nurses and Midwives' Union

Queensland Nurses and Midwives' Union Authorised by S. Beaman, Secretary, Queensland Nurses and Midwives’ Union, West End, 4101. Membership of the QNMU also provides for full membership of the ANMF.

The Queensland Nurses and Midwives' Union (QNMU) is the peak industrial and professional organisation for nurses and midwives working in public and private health and aged care in Queensland. The QNMU seeks to promote and defend the industrial, professional, social, political and democratic interests of more than 70,000 members. Members include:

Registered nurses
Midwives
Enrolled nur

ses
Assistants in nursing (however titled)
Students
Anyone who undertakes nursing work

There is no other organisation in Queensland which provides comprehensive representation for nurses and midwives as both employees and professionals. The QNMU is a state-registered union and a branch of the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Federation (ANMF), which has branches in each state and territory, which means the Union is also active in promoting the interests of nurses and midwives on a national and international level. Members have the opportunity to be actively involved in the QNMU and decide our priorities through the Union’s democratic structure. Ultimately, it’s these priorities and policies which help influence and shape the practice of nursing and midwifery in Queensland. Nurses and midwives, through the QNMU, have a long and proud history of working together to achieve improvements to working conditions, to the profession and, through the broader union movement, to the lives of all Australians. Nurses and midwives continue to work together and pool their combined resources and knowledge to protect and further the common interests of all members. Find out more at www.qnmu.org.au

The QNMU encourages and supports online dialogue on our social media forums, and we encourage members and users to be familiar with our social media terms of use at www.qnmu.org.au/SocialMediaTOU

Congratulations to the QNMU Bundaberg Base Hospital Branch 🌟

FINALIST for the Branch of the Year Award at our 2026 QNMU Nursing and Midwifery Excellence Awards 👏👏

The Bundaberg Base Hospital Branch has undergone a significant resurgence over the past 18 months, emerging as a stronger, more unified, and more effective advocate for its members.

Through regular branch meetings, sustained engagement with members across the hospital, and a growing network of delegates working collaboratively across BBHB, the branch has rebuilt its collective voice and expanded its reach.

A key focus has been informing members about their rights, their entitlements, and the full range of support available through QNMU membership – from free education sessions and industrial relations leave to legal support and member services.

The branch has also strengthened its visibility and presence within the workplace, reinforcing its commitment to standing alongside members through disputes, enterprise agreement negotiations, and employment rights enquiries.

United, visible, and growing, the Bundaberg Base Hospital Branch is a testament to what dedicated advocacy from the ground up can achieve.

“We have developed greater unity and strengthened our collective voice. Every step forward has been achieved together – through showing up, staying engaged, and standing united for our members.”

The Branch of the Year Award is proudly supported by Great Southern Bank.

Congratulations to Ruth Blunderfield, Registered Nurse, Toowoomba Hospital 🌟

FINALIST for The Aunty Dulcie Flower and Aunty Gracelyn Smallwood Award at our 2026 QNMU Nursing and Midwifery Excellence Awards 👏👏

Ruth Blunderfield is a Gubbi Gubbi woman and Registered Nurse whose approach to care is rooted in culture, community, and an unwavering respect for every person she serves. Working at Toowoomba Hospital’s Nursing Support Unit and as a Registered Nurse with St John Ambulance, Ruth brings her skills and values to her community both inside and outside the hospital.

Central to her practice is a holistic, community-centred philosophy – one that sees every patient not as an individual in isolation, but as part of an extended family and community network that is integral to their care and healing.

Ruth has always believed that nursing extends beyond the hospital ward and into the broader community, and that every person who enters her care – regardless of background, belief, or circumstance – deserves to be treated with dignity, respect, and genuine compassion.
In Ruth’s hands, nursing is not only a clinical responsibility but a deeply personal expression of care for her mob.

“Nursing is not just for the patient – we are nursing the mob. Every patient is important, no matter who they are, where they come from, or what they believe. They deserve to be respected and made to feel valued. That is our responsibility, in hospitals and in the community.”

The Aunty Dulcie Flower and Aunty Gracelyn Smallwood Award is proudly supported by HESTA.

Nurses, midwives and carers deserve to have their work properly recognised and valued 🙌💯

That's why the ANMF is running the Nurses and Midwives Work Value Case before the Fair Work Commission, seeking improvements to the Nurses Award 2020.

General practice nurse Adama says the push for long-overdue wage increases is about far more than money – it’s finally recognising the value and complexity of the work nurses, midwives and carers do.

FINALIST for The Aunty Dulcie Flower and Aunty Gracelyn Smallwood Award at our 2026 QNMU Nursing and Midwifery Excellence Awards 👏👏

Madeline Ford is a proud Bigambul and Darkinjung woman whose nursing and midwifery career has taken her from critical care and aeromedical retrieval to remote First Nations clinics – and now into academia, where she is channelling a lifetime of experience into shaping the future of rural and remote healthcare.

In her current role as Senior Academic Lead, Allied Health and Nursing at the Murtupuni Centre for Rural and Remote Health, Madeline leads with both clinical depth and cultural conviction, while also undertaking a PhD exploring how to strengthen First Nations workforce retention.

For Madeline, her career has been about getting better healthcare to the people who need it most. Improving access to healthcare in remote and First Nations communities is not just a professional pursuit – it is personal, purposeful, and lifelong.

“Growing up in rural Queensland, I saw firsthand what limited access to healthcare looked like. That experience never left me, and it is what drives my commitment to improving access for remote and First Nations communities, in everything I do.”

Congratulations to Shirley Nield – Clinical Nurse, Gold Coast University Hospital 🌟

FINALIST for the Activist of the Year Award at our 2026 QNMU Nursing and Midwifery Excellence Awards 👏👏

Shirley Neild is a Clinical Nurse at Gold Coast University Hospital whose commitment to advocacy, cultural inclusion, and collective leadership extends well beyond the walls of her workplace.

An active QNMU member, Shirley has been a consistent champion of work health and safety representation, workload advocacy, staff wellbeing, and cultural inclusion across her health service.

As a participant in the Anna Stewart Memorial Project – a union leadership and activism program designed to build advocacy and organising skills – she has strengthened her own practice while encouraging colleagues to find their voice and engage in collective action.

Beyond nursing, Shirley serves as President of the Filipino Community Council of Queensland, where she leads multicultural initiatives that promote diversity, cultural connection, and community wellbeing across the state.

In both her professional and community roles, Shirley is grounded in compassion, collaboration, and a belief in empowering others – and she leads by example in every space she occupies.

“I believe strongly in respectful leadership, collaboration, and empowering others to have a voice in creating positive change. Whether in the hospital or in the community, my work is grounded in care for people and creating safe, inclusive spaces where everyone belongs.”

Ahead of World Refugee Day tomorrow, and during Refugee Week, the QNMU acknowledges and thanks the many nurses, midwives and carers who came to Australia as refugees and who now make invaluable contributions to our professions, workplaces and communities 🫶🌏

Every day, refugee nurses, midwives and carers bring compassion, resilience, skill and diverse experiences to the care they provide, enriching our healthcare system and helping deliver better outcomes for patients and residents across Queensland.

Their stories remind us of the strength that comes from diversity and the important role that welcoming and inclusive communities play in helping people rebuild their lives.

Today, we celebrate and thank refugee healthcare workers for all they do.

Congratulations to Lorraine Rock – Enrolled Nurse, Proserpine Nursing Home 🌟

FINALIST for the Activist of the Year Award at our 2026 QNMU Nursing and Midwifery Excellence Awards 👏👏

Lorraine Rock has devoted more than five decades to nursing, with the past 39 years dedicated entirely to aged care at Proserpine Nursing Home – a workplace she has fought fiercely to protect.

A proud union member since 1973 and co-founder of the Proserpine Nursing Home Branch in 2010, Lorraine has long been an advocate for improved staffing, better conditions, and the dignity and safety of elderly residents.

Her commitment was tested most profoundly in recent years, when the appointment of a temporary manager whose conduct was deemed inappropriate and disrespectful toward residents, families, and staff created widespread fear and declining morale across the facility.

Working quietly but relentlessly behind the scenes, Lorraine helped coordinate more than 84 written complaints to the facility’s Board of Directors – persisting through months of uncertainty, self-doubt, and emotional strain until the manager’s employment was terminated.

The outcome was a testament to what collective determination can achieve, and a moment Lorraine describes as feeling like a huge cloud lifting. Her branch, which she has continued to build and strengthen alongside fellow delegates, remains as active and committed as ever.
“There were many private moments where I was in tears, questioning whether I had the strength to see it through. But the sense of relief afterwards – it took several days to truly believe what we had achieved together. I have always been strongly union-minded, and I am very proud to stand by those values.”

The Activist of the Year Award is proudly supported by Nurse Midwife Health Program Australia.
