🌊 Week 2 Complete βœ… – Movimentu Kalma Iha Bee Project πŸ‡ΉπŸ‡±

Week 2 of the Movimentu Kalma Iha Bee Project has now been successfully completed in the heart of Beloi, Atauro Island, with an incredible 214 participants engaged throughout the week.

It was a busy and rewarding week as delivery was carefully scheduled around important religious holidays observed across Atauro Island.

Despite some challenging conditions, including wind, rain, and swell, our team continued to deliver practical aquatic education, water safety, drowning prevention, and rescue awareness sessions to the Beloi community.

This week also saw some of our smallest participants join the project, bringing plenty of energy, curiosity, and excitement to the program!

A major focus continues to be empowering local Timorese staff to confidently deliver water safety education in their own communities, in local language, while building long-term sustainability and local capacity.

A huge thank you and congratulations to our incredible volunteers; Claire Keane, Sally Dymond and Louise Rosemann for taking time out of their own lives to travel to Atauro Island and be part of the delivery team for this first-of-its-kind project.

Your support, energy, and commitment have contributed greatly to the success of this initiative.

Thank you also to The Phillips Foundation for supporting this project, and to all Yellow Dove Australia volunteers, Timorese staff, and community leaders making this work possible.

Together, we are creating safer communities around water πŸ’™

🌊 Week 2 Update – Movimentu Kalma Iha Bee Project πŸ‡ΉπŸ‡±

Week 2 of the Movimentu Kalma Iha Bee Project is officially halfway through, now operating in the heart of Beloi Village with 214 participants!

This week, our project team is continuing to deliver practical water safety education, survival swimming skills, lifejacket safety, rescue awareness, and emergency response training to local schools and community members.

A core focus of this project is empowering local Timorese staff to lead water safety education within their own communities, in local language, while building long-term confidence, skills, and sustainability.

This is more than swimming lessons - this is community education, drowning prevention, and local capacity building in action.

A sincere thank you to The Phillips Foundation for supporting this initiative through the Swimming with Life Skills Grant, and to all Yellow Dove Australia volunteers, Timorese staff, and community leaders making this project possible.

Together, we are creating safer communities around water πŸ’™

βœ…Day 1 complete for Movimentu Kalma Iha Bee 🌊

Today, the official first day of the project was delivered to 170 students from the VILA/BELOI community schools on Atauro Island, Timor-Leste.

An incredible effort from our Timorese staff, who did an outstanding job delivering and managing the program throughout the day. Their commitment, leadership, and passion is what makes this project possible and continues to drive meaningful educational change within their own communities.

A huge thank you also to our amazing volunteers, and Claire Keane, whose energy and support made today such a success. We are grateful to have such a dedicated team working together across this 4-week initiative.

Thank you to the wider Brisbane swimming community + Effortless Swimming, Swim And Connect, Valley Pool Brisbane and Aquatic Education for your generous donations of swimwear, goggles, and school supplies. These resources will be distributed across the schools and communities we are working with over the next four weeks and will directly support access, participation, and learning outcomes for local children.

Day 3 βœ… - Royal Lifesaving Australian Bronze Medallion

Yesterday marked a historic milestone for Atauro Island and the Timorese Community through the Movimentu Kalma Iha Bee Project (Calm Moving Water Project).

For the first time ever, 10 local community members from Atauro Island have successfully completed and received a Royal Life Saving – Australia award.

This achievement is far bigger than a certificate. It represents access, opportunity, and recognition for a community that has long deserved investment in education, safety, and local skill development.

These 10 individuals are not only becoming trained staff in a drowning prevention project - they are now recognised as trained community members with an Australian award in Lifesaving Education.

With the proud support from The Phillips Foundation (Australia, Asia and Africa) and the ongoing support from Penny Hodgers and Royal Life Saving - NSW ACT Tasmania - Together we're building the foundations for stronger local emergency response, aquatic education, and safer communities. Capacity building is one thing. Delivering measurable, sustainable change is another.

This is Timorese, by community, for community ❀️

πŸ‡ΉπŸ‡±πŸ‡ΉπŸ‡±πŸŒŠ Meet the Team πŸŒŠπŸ‡ΉπŸ‡±πŸ‡ΉπŸ‡±

Introducing the 10-person team delivering the month-long drowning prevention initiative, Movimentu Kalma Iha Bee β€” β€œCalm Moving Water” Project.

Proudly sponsored by The Phillips Foundation and delivered in collaboration with the Timorese Government, local Atauro authorities, and ATKOMA.

This project is about far more than drowning prevention.

It is about community capacity building, creating pathways, strengthening local leadership, and returning voice to communities who deserve to lead their own future.

Together, we are building local first responders, strengthening community resilience and aquatic education, and investing in sustainable change. We operate under the Yda Ethical and Sustainable Community Capacity Framework to ensure we exit sustainably, leaving only empowered people, not just photos and a feel good story 🧑

This is not about Yellow Dove Australia.
This is about the people of Atauro.
This is for Timorese, by community, for community πŸ‡ΉπŸ‡±
