The 2026 AIATSIS Summit provided an invaluable opportunity to learn, listen and connect with people from across the country who are contributing to important conversations and action in their communities.

The depth of knowledge, insight and experience shared throughout the week highlighted both the complexity of the challenges we face and the strength that comes from working together.

Reconciliation Queensland was proud to support the Summit as a sponsor of one of the coffee carts, helping create space for connection and conversation. It was also wonderful to see several of our Board members in attendance and contributing to discussions throughout the event.

Congratulations to AIATSIS on delivering another outstanding Summit, culminating in a memorable dinner that celebrated the many voices, stories and perspectives shared across the week.

Today, we honour the legacy of Eddie Koiki Mabo and the historic impact of his fight for native title.

Mabo Day recognises the landmark High Court decision that overturned the legal doctrine of terra nullius.

The decision acknowledged that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples held land and sea rights based on their traditions and unbroken connection to Country.

Born in Mer Island, Koiki Mabo’s determination and advocacy created lasting change for generations to come. His legacy continues to inspire pride in culture, connection to Country and the ongoing journey towards recognition and justice.

Happy Mabo Day! 🎉

The final day of National Reconciliation Week every year is one of the most significant in Australia.

Mabo Day, celebrated annually on 3 June, commemorates Mer Island man Eddie Koiki Mabo and his successful advocacy to overturn the legal fiction of terra nullius, or ‘land belonging to no-one’.

Following the High Court’s Mabo decision, Australia’s Federal Parliament passed the Native Title Act 1993 which established a legal framework for native title claims throughout Australia by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

and Mabo Day are a reminder to be ‘All In’ to learn about our shared histories, cultures, and achievements, and to commit ourselves to reconciliation and the fight for First Nations justice in Australia.
