A great story from one of our spotters in his last swing. He managed to save two joey Gliders πΏ
Jeff Took them into care but had nothing to feed them. He remembered that the kitchen had lactose free milk. He grabbed a carton and mixed it with honey and fed them that. Marty from the Environmental department contacted people from the Cairns Wildlife Group. Short version is they supplied Milk Powder, as well as Insectivore Powder, Lorikeet Powder, Teats, Bottles and Syringes. He was a very happy Carer/Rehabilitator when this turned up. He kept them for 7 days while Marty and Chelsea worked on the logistics of getting them to Cairns for rehabilitation and for later release. After much work by them, they secured authorised transport to Cairns directly into the hands of the Cairns Group President. As of yesterday, they are now doing well up in Kuranda and about to meet some other Joey Gliders to colonise together. Both of these Savannah Gliders are females. Sugar Gliders have been split into three species. Up here they are classified as Savannah Gliders. They will probably be moved to Weipa and released there. There is a Carer there that has access to an area that is very Savannah Glider friendly.
A great result for us, the Environmental department and the mine itself.
