Brisbane/Meanjin International Women's Day Rally and March for Women’s Liberation 2025 -the Sunday after IWD - 10 am @ Reddacliff Place

Women are FIRED UP!!

We continue the tradition of marking this day with activism. We celebrate our gains as women, we recommit to unfinished struggles, and we persist where we have faced setbacks. The state, the corporates, and the UN, with the postmodern neoliberals are fast erasing women's rights, but grass roots women, held by our herstory, are just getting started in our resistance.

Real feminism is about women’s liberation from systems of male dominance and male supremacy. We live in a time when the sale and commodified abuse of womens bodies is pushed as a job like any other, when the consumption of that filmed abuse - po*******hy - is at the fingertips of every child, and generations are being shaped by mens s*xual sa**sm. We live in a time of back sliding, when women’s hard won rights have been lost. We have lost the rights to single-s*x anything, and le***an gatherings have had to go underground.

Did you know that women no longer have a right to single-s*x (female only) spaces, services or sports?

The systems and structures of this society were not made in women's interests, and should be torn down. In the meantime, however, the goal of women's liberation feminism is to do our utmost to liberate women and children from murder, r**e, beatings, in**st, forced birthing, s*xual and reproductive exploitation, lesbophobia, s*xual harassment, and other forms of s*x discrimination, and we can't achieve that without single s*x spaces. And we certainly can’t do it without a clear understanding of who commits these crimes and who they are committed against. The insight of real feminism is the recognition of men's violence against women - the threat of it, the fear of it, how it is s*xualised, and how it upholds the status quo and keeps women down.

Australia’s S*x Discrimination Act was created to achieve equality for women and girls. It prohibited s*x-based discrimination and provided for single s*x spaces, services, rights and opportunities. In 2013 that all changed. The Australian government erased women and girls from the very Act designed to protect them. The changes included removing the definitions of “woman” and “man” from the Act and adding the definition of “gender identity”. Now, males who claim they are female use the Act to demand access to women’s and girls’ protections and to penalise those who do not comply.

It is time to restore women’s rights in Australia.

The S*x Discrimination Act needs to be fixed to Restore Women's Rights. TAKE ACTION: https://www.restorewomensrights.org.au/

The S*x Discrimination Act should not let men access women’s spaces.

The S*x Discrimination Act should not prioritise gender identity over s*x.

The S*x Discrimination Act should protect women and girls.

We need your help to convince politicians that this is important.

We have written to all politicians in the Australian parliament about these issues. See our letter here: https://assets.nationbuilder.com/restorewomensrights/pages/14/attachments/original/1738741360/AF4WR-letter-to-PM-and-AG-RWR_250205_130131.pdf?1738741360

Australian politicians are saying that they don't believe this is important to Australians. They need to hear from you, their constituents. Tell your local MP and Senators that women and girls need their rights and protections under the S*x Discrimination Act restored.

At the coming 6th Annual Brisbane Women's Liberation Conference, 6 - 8 March 2025, Dr Helen Easton will deliver a presentation "Contested Discourses: The Power of Legal Consciousness in Supporting Women’s Exit from Prostitution."

The regulation of prostitution continues to challenge legislators. In Australia, both Queensland and South Australia have recently reconsidered their legal frameworks. Queensland on one hand has recommended and implemented a model which fully decriminalizes prostitution. South Australia on the other has debated the introduction of the Nordic or Equality model which decriminalises only those who sell s*x and creates a statutory responsibility to provide exiting support to those who need it. This paper has two aims. First it will briefly trace this split in the debate about prostitution, situating it within its wider historic and feminist context in order to expose the contradictions and limitations which cause this ongoing tension. Second, it will present some key findings from recent research which aimed to address this legal stalemate by investigating the experiences of 53 women exiting indoor prostitution in the UK and 8 exiting practitioners.

Helen has recently completed a PhD in Law at Macquarie Law School. She is currently employed as a sessional academic across Criminology, Sociology and Law at both Macquarie University and University of Sydney.

Helen's book “Exiting Prostitution” (2014) informed efforts to reform the legal frameworks relating to prostitution in England and Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.

EARLY BIRD conference registration ends on 28 January. Email [email protected] to express interest.
