Visit Petrie Terrace Gallery to see amazing artworks like Literally by Steven Whitfield in the 2026 Queen's Wharf Brisbane Art Prize!

Steven says on his piece:
"Literally is inspired by Brisbane’s Cultural Precinct and the experience of walking through South Brisbane after dark, when the city’s architecture, public art and riverfront spaces take on a different character. The painting captures the illuminated façade of the Gallery of Modern Art (GOMA) against the evening sky. Cast across the building is the monumental shadow of Michael Parekōwhai’s iconic public sculpture, The World Turns, while a solitary figure pauses in quiet reflection. While Brisbane is often defined by its subtropical climate and rapid growth, its cultural institutions heavily shape the city’s identity. In this work, the sculpture’s massive shadow transforms the gallery wall into a temporary canvas. This creates an artwork within an artwork, prompting viewers to consider how perspective constructs meaning. The title Literally references both the physical shadow and our tendency to seek simple explanations for complex narratives. While the silhouette suggests an obvious story, closer examination reveals deeper layers of interpretation, reminding us that every city contains multiple histories, viewpoints, and lived experiences. Inspired by evening walks through Brisbane’s art precinct and conversations about contemporary issues, Literally reflects on the role of public spaces in shaping how we see ourselves, our community and our city."

✨ Come and experience the incredible Queen’s Wharf Brisbane Art Prize at Petrie Terrace Gallery ✨ Currently on show are artworks such as Welcome Home by David Ladley F.R.Q.A.S.

David says on this piece:
"The title is probably a little sentimental, but the real purpose of my paintings is to record a significant period in Qld housing history.
Early timber houses were quite basic in terms of functional accommodation, but from about 1875 until the first world war brought change. The wealthier families liked to indulge in evidence of their prosperity. Decoration in the grander homes displayed gables with fretwork showing foliage, flowers, fruit and vines. Pluses more geometric roof finishes.
Hopefully these old homes will be preserved and cared for so future generations can appreciate."

Visit Petrie Terrace Gallery today to see how local artists capture both the big and little things we love about Brisbane, including Every Wednesday by Tanya Burkitt.

Tanya says on her own artwork, "It’s the little things that we sometimes take for granted. We’re so fortunate to have a rubbish collection system to keep our beautiful Brisbane city clean. As a kid, our rubbish bins were small, not fly proof and the newspapers were shoved in the same bin, no recycling. Sweaty men would run with the bin on one shoulder, leaping fences and avoiding dogs, lucky to receive a ‘tallie of ###X’ for Christmas.
“Every Wednesday” is a story of our collective routine of having our rubbish and recycling removed. The crows are part of our suburban landscape. This scene is from my street where I have lived for 43 years."

🖼️ The 2026 Queen's Wharf Brisbane Art Prize is currently on show at Petrie Terrace Gallery! Visit today to see artwork such as Patrick Street - Milton by Miriam Innes.

Miriam says on her own artwork, "Patrick Street – Milton reflects my ongoing interest in the quiet architectural details and lived histories embedded within suburban landscapes. Through drawing, I am drawn to places that may appear ordinary or overlooked, yet hold strong traces of memory, transition and community identity.
This work documents a streetscape in Milton, the elevated Queenslander forms, layered vegetation, powerlines, and narrow residential passages characteristic of Brisbane’s inner suburbs. These environments tell stories of adaptation, of homes responding to climate, flood and the changing nature of the city itself. The drawing becomes both a record and a reflection on how Brisbane continues to evolve while retaining fragments of its past.
My connection to Brisbane is grounded in observation and familiarity. Living and working in Queensland, I spend significant time walking, sketching, photographing and studying urban and regional environments. Through tonal drawing and detailed mark-making, I aim to slow down the act of looking and encourage viewers to reconsider the significance of everyday spaces within the city.
Rather than depicting iconic landmarks, my practice focuses on the quieter edges of Brisbane, the residential streets, ageing structures and subtle architectural rhythms that shape collective memory and local identity. Through this process, the work becomes a meditation on place, belonging and a visual language which is unique to Greater Brisbane."
