The homeless are no longer who we assume they are.
More and more members of our community just like us... one day it could be us!
The older retired generations, young families, women escaping DV, teens who've been kicked out of home, those unable to find a job, neighbours, strangers who are just unable to keep up with the rising costs of rent, fuel and food.
Many Aussies love to spend 2/3 days "roughing it" in a tent, escaping to an idyllic spot in the bush or on the beach for a quite weekend of camping, often with family and friends, a comfy air mattress, plenty of food and a few cold beers. But a growing number of our community are spending everyday "camping" in a location overcrowded and sometimes dangerous with no safe, clean home to return to if they are in danger, or there is a storm coming or they just want to sleep in a warm bed.

Right now in Brisbane, homelessness remains a growing and complex issue. While there are positive steps being taken, the reality is that more needs to be done.

The Queensland Government is investing in social and affordable housing, crisis accommodation and specialist homelessness services. Outreach teams are working to connect people sleeping rough with housing, healthcare and support programs. Community organisations across Brisbane are providing daily frontline assistance - meals, emergency relief, laundry and shower services, case management and pathways toward employment and long-term housing.

These efforts matter. They are making a difference.
But demand continues to outpace supply. Affordable housing remains limited, crisis accommodation fills quickly, and many services are stretched. Stronger collaboration, sustained investment and practical community involvement are essential.

At Signal Flare - Helping the Homeless and Others in Need, we see this firsthand. Our events provide hot meals, pantry items, clothing, haircuts and a safe space, while we continue strengthening connections to services that support long-term stability and future outcomes.

Importantly, real change also happens at ground level. Community members can do more by:
• Donating a few hours of their time to volunteer
• Offering professional skills - trades, healthcare, admin, mentoring, employment support
• Contributing small financial donations that directly fund meals, supplies and services

When many people give a little, it creates a significant impact.

Brisbane has a foundation to build on but together, government, charities and everyday community members can do more.

The events in Musgrave Park Thursday morning this past week were shocking. Imagine awakening to being forcibly removed from your dwelling, gathering up everything you own in your arms, and told to move – now. People sleeping rough are not generally there by choice, with little options for what each day holds. We hear and see and feel the emotions and turmoil these actions have generated. We will continue to help people in any way we can.

Life on the street changes every day - and we know it’s not easy.

You told us what you need, and we listened.

In 2026, Signal Flare is expanding across Greater Brisbane to reach more people, in more places, with practical support and services to help you face each day with confidence.

We’re putting our BBQ events on hold for now to make sure we can bring you the best we have to offer this year.

Stay tuned and keep an eye out for our first event in the coming months.
