Right now in Brisbane, homelessness remains a growing and complex issue. While there are positive steps being taken, the reality is that more needs to be done.
The Queensland Government is investing in social and affordable housing, crisis accommodation and specialist homelessness services. Outreach teams are working to connect people sleeping rough with housing, healthcare and support programs. Community organisations across Brisbane are providing daily frontline assistance - meals, emergency relief, laundry and shower services, case management and pathways toward employment and long-term housing.
These efforts matter. They are making a difference.
But demand continues to outpace supply. Affordable housing remains limited, crisis accommodation fills quickly, and many services are stretched. Stronger collaboration, sustained investment and practical community involvement are essential.
At Signal Flare - Helping the Homeless and Others in Need, we see this firsthand. Our events provide hot meals, pantry items, clothing, haircuts and a safe space, while we continue strengthening connections to services that support long-term stability and future outcomes.
Importantly, real change also happens at ground level. Community members can do more by:
• Donating a few hours of their time to volunteer
• Offering professional skills - trades, healthcare, admin, mentoring, employment support
• Contributing small financial donations that directly fund meals, supplies and services
When many people give a little, it creates a significant impact.
Brisbane has a foundation to build on but together, government, charities and everyday community members can do more.
