Rhodesian Veterans Association

Rhodesian Veterans Association Welcome to the Rhodesian Veterans Assoc.. We are here to remember, support, communicate and connect.

The Rhodesian Veterans Association was set up as means of supporting ex-servicemen and women in need across Australia. We see our role as providing a link between members of all the armed forces of Rhodesia, but most importantly remembering all those Rhodesians that lost their lives or suffered injury in war. Our membership is open to all ex-service personnel and their families.

The Sweetheart in the Static A Poem for Sally Donaldson

In the hush between the rifle cracks,
where distance felt like flame,
a woman’s voice slipped through the dark
and softly spoke their names.

She was hope wrapped in radio warmth,
a heartbeat over air,
a sultry thread of tenderness
woven through the troopies’ prayer.

They called her Sweetheart of the Forces,
the bird within the bush,
for even in the deepest night
her laughter gave a hush.

A hush of home, of waiting arms,
of spoons in sugar bowls,
of cheeky jokes and gentle winks
that stitched together souls.

She drove the lonely roads to them,
to “the sharp end” where they lay,
bringing music, light, and memory
to chase their fears away.

And though the war outlived the girl
who lifted spirits high,
her echo wandered far beyond
the limits of the sky.

Her later years grew heavy,
her path grew thorned and thin,
yet still her voice
remembered,
kept singing from within.

And when her final whisper
left Zimbabwe’s weary air,
it carried all her kindness
and the courage she would share.

Now every troopie, grey with time,
who hears a song she played,
still feels the warmth of Sally’s voice
in memories she made.

So raise a glass to Sally,
the voice that would not tire,
a quiet flame in the radio dust,
a sweetheart forged in fire.

For somewhere past the borders
where sorrow cannot tread,
the “bird within the bush” still sings
for living and for dead.
