💡 Reflecting on a week of learning, our energy lead Saideh Kent shares how she is reminded of the critical role that trust and relationships play in driving meaningful change.

At the Place Australia Conference in Brisbane this week, more than 300 people from diverse communities and contexts came together to explore the elements of place-based change.

“Despite the differences in settings, a consistent theme emerged: communities achieving lasting impact are those that build trust and collaboration across diverse relationships,” says Saideh.

She noted the message was also reinforced in the Regional Australia Institute’s recent Collective Governance Discussion Paper, presented in a webinar last week.

The paper explores how multiple stakeholders come together to make shared decisions. It emphasises the importance of building trust and lasting relationships, through a shared understanding and commitment to a process that builds on small wins to achieve strategic goals.

“This is a timely paper on collective governance, as many regions consider different governance models to manage renewable energy community benefit funds,” says Saideh.

“Different communities begin the energy transition with different levels of trust or strong relationships. Our work with councils in Hay and Uralla shows that a shared process can build trust, strengthen collaboration and support action toward common goals.”

It was encouraging to see a huge turnout, with people of all ages showing up on a cold Canberra winter night 🤝

Every week, there are more news stories that prove that our economy is not working for regular Australians. A wellbeing economy is the guiding framework to get us back on track as the egalitarian country we can be. 💪

⭐ South West Queensland just launched its Future Economy Strategy – and it was built by the people who live and work there.

More than 77 community members, producers, council staff, First Nations organisations and local businesses shaped a practical, region-wide plan to diversify economies, attract investment and manage transition on their own terms.

The work spans six councils across a vast outback region navigating real pressures – energy costs, workforce shortages, housing stress and uncertainty in gas and oil – and turns them into roadmaps for action.

Green ammonia in Balonne. Microgrids in Quilpie. Waste-to-energy at the Roma saleyards. Thirty-three visiting health services coordinated through a community-led Aboriginal health corporation in Cunnamulla. This is what locally-led transition looks like.

Earlier this year SWQROC mayors took the plan to Canberra, presenting directly to federal politicians and agencies and making the case for the investment settings this region needs.

Proud to have worked alongside SWQROC and these communities as economic development partners. This is exactly the kind of work that shows transition doesn't have to happen to communities – it can be shaped by them.

💰 Did you know that by delaying essential electricity upgrades by just one year, we could add up to $40 billion in extra costs to our energy system due to increased reliance on thermal generation?

In this video our CEO Lizzie Webb draws from our new short paper to explain why we must move beyond the short term and start building for full economy-wide decarbonisation. 💪

Decarbonising and increasing the capacity of the Grid is part of our short series: In Brief: Investing in regions, unlocking the transition.

Our new briefs provide a bird's-eye view of focus areas, including developing green export industries and decarbonising the grid.
