WHEN "STORMS" ARE COMING
In 2012, while living in Connecticut, I remember the urgent warnings about Hurricane Sandy—the worst storm the East Coast had ever seen. News reports told us to prepare for shattered windows, trees crashing down, and even branches flying like spears through the air. It said to shelter in a place without windows, and the only place I could find in our house was the hallway because every room had windows! It was frightening and dramatic.
During that time, I received an email with this beautiful blessing for the trees, a prayer to help them weather the storm. With an acre of woods surrounding our home, it felt important. Now, more than a decade later, that blessing comes to mind—not just as a memory but as a helpful teaching and metaphor for life, which often has storms, too!
There are so many beautiful parts here!
1. Care for yourself. Self-care is utmost. Love yourself, rest, recharge, and honor what you need to stay strong.
2. When storms come—whether in the form of challenges, changes, or uncertainty—we, too, need to ground deeply, breathe, and find our centre.
3. Be Supple and Bend. Life’s challenges can be like strong winds, but resistance only causes strain. By bending rather than breaking, by adjusting rather than resisting, we allow ourselves to move through difficulties with grace and adaptability.
4. This one particularly stood out to me: “Leaves, please drop if you can, or become slippery and turn on edge so the wind-driven rain slips past you or any snow slips off.” We too, can let go of limiting beliefs, painful memories, or rigid opinions, so hurtful things can just slip off.
