Kinisou chapur and kalahngan lap to everyone who joined us for the very first community screening of Remathau in Ōtepoti 🌊🩵

From children to elders - it was so heartwarming to share space with such an intergenerational audience and aporous/ kōrero with Dr Nicole Yamase!

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the Centre for Pacific Thought, University of Otago, and Nia Tero for supporting this event and helping bring such a deeply powerful film to the community.

We also acknowledge the Otago Kiribati Islanders Student Association (OKISA) — the only Micronesian student association at the University of Otago for making the screening more memorable with their presence.

Remathau follows the journey of Dr. Nicole Yamase, a young marine biologist from Micronesia who ventures to the deepest part of the ocean and embarks on an even deeper journey of self-discovery, reconnecting with her people’s resilience, identity, and oceanic roots.

Saying yes to growth, connection, and the unknown 🌊✨

For Future Ancestor, Eli Sojnocki, solo travel was never just about seeing the world — it was about becoming. What started as a dream in high school turned into a journey of courage, purpose, and self-discovery across countries, cultures, and communities.
“As amazing as this journey has been, uprooting my life and committing to the path I knew was meant for me has also been one of the hardest experiences I’ve gone through. Although looking back, I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Going into this journey I was clear on what I wanted to gain from it, which for me was a right of passage for the person I want to become and am becoming as I figure out my place in this world. Giving myself the gift of time to really be in the present moment, to experience the many different wondrous things life has to offer and to focus inward on myself by stepping outside of my familiar and comfortable life.”
Through volunteering, she found more than places to stay — she found te kaainga (family) in strangers, homes away from home, and a deeper understanding of herself and the world around her.

Eli’s story is a reminder that the journey meant for you won’t always be easy, but it will shape you in ways comfort never could. You don’t have to leave everything behind to transform your life. Follow the thing that sparks something within you — and trust where it leads 🐚
