Today, we honour and remember the courage, sacrifice, and resilience of those who have served and continue to serve on ANZAC Day.
This day marks the anniversary of the Gallipoli campaign, where Australian and New Zealand soldiers first served together as the ANZACs. It has since become a time to reflect on all who have contributed to military service, and the lasting impact of war on individuals, families, and communities.
The Social Work profession plays a crucial role in the comprehensive services available to both current and former military personnel and their families residing in various cities and regions across Australia. The roots of social work in Australia trace back to the Red Cross Welfare Service over a century ago, particularly in the aftermath of World War I. Social workers have been offering essential casework services and support to soldiers and their families since that time. Internationally, Military Social Work holds significant esteem and is recognized as a specialized field of practice in several countries.
As social workers, we recognise that the effects of service do not end when the uniform comes off. Veterans may experience challenges such as trauma, mental health concerns, social isolation, and difficulties transitioning to civilian life.
