What’s really stopping students from getting mental health support? Staff from our mental health services connected with UniSC students to find out—and the results are eye-opening. 🎓🧠

💬 100 students shared their experiences with us. The biggest barriers? Cost and not knowing where to go for help. Many also told us that clear, simple information and easy walk-in support would make a real difference.

These insights will help us shape our services to be more approachable, accessible, and student-friendly—no jargon, no judgement.

A big thank you to Stride Mental Health Caboolture for partnering with us to collect this important data.

Politics in the Pub made a powerful return to Brisbane Powerhouse, sparking vital conversations about youth support versus restriction. Our expert panel tackled how changing laws and rising regulations are shaping the lives of young people, followed by a lively Q&A where the audience’s voices were heard.

Miranda Woods from New Farm Neighbourhood Centre opened the event, with Elly Pashen from 4ZZZ Radio guiding the discussion. The panel featured passionate advocates: Joshua Golato and Verona Hilzinger from YMCA Queensland Youth Parliament, Katherine Hayes (Youth Advocacy Centre CEO), and social worker and proud Boorooberongal woman Emma Matthews.

Thank you to everyone who joined us and contributed to this important dialogue. Special thanks to Patrons of New Farm , Village Voice Brisbane, and BRISBANE POWERHOUSE for supporting this event.

Our CEO, Karen Dare, alongside HART4000 Manager Joe Wright and Community Services Manager Kelly Sciacca, recently attended the Queensland Homelessness Conference 🏠 —a powerful gathering of leaders, advocates, and frontline services from across the state.

Over three days, they connected with passionate voices working to prevent homelessness, strengthen service integration, and ensure every Queenslander has a safe place to call home. This year’s theme, “Holding Space for Change through Prevention, Partnerships, and Practice,” reminds us that real solutions happen when we break down silos and work together. 🤝

Homelessness, domestic and family violence, mental health, and addiction are deeply connected issues. By aligning housing, health, and community supports, we can build truly preventative pathways for those at risk. The insights and inspiration our team gained will help us drive meaningful change—because everyone deserves safety, dignity, and hope.

We pause to honour National Sorry Day (May 26th), remembering the Stolen Generations and all who were impacted. Today marks 29 years since the tabling of the "Bringing them Home" report, which was a landmark truth-telling document that detailed the extent of the atrocities inflicted on the Stolen Generations, and made recommendations for appropriate reparations to survivors and their families.

"Saying sorry matters" - to acknowledge the truth and show compassion.

Tomorrow, May 27th, is the 59th anniversary of the 1967 Referendum, which advanced constitutional rights for First Nations peoples. The referendum proposed to change the Constitution so that Aboriginal peoples and Torres Strait Islander peoples would be counted in the census, and conferred power to the Australian Government to make federal laws for First Nations peoples.
