Although the Enoggera creek was not flowing at the Ashgrove Avenue bridge yesterday, its pools provide critical refuge for birds, eel-tailed catfish, frogs, rakali, turtles and all the life we can't immediately (including cane toads...groan). It was lovely watching this egret (and ibis) wading and feeding.

We're still desperate for some real rain, but it's amazing how a small shower can change the creek.

Yesterday we measured 4.8mm near our site, and most gauges across the catchment are showing 3 to 4mm. And hey presto, there was some 'flow' under Ashgrove Avenue bridge this morning. Not enough to be seen downstream at Tennis Avenue Bushcare but a huge change visible at the green bridge. Before and after pics from yesterday and today.

Still crossing fingers for more rain soon!

Its not just w**ding, planting and watering we do. We like to detail and work to regenerate the whole creek corridor ecosystem. So in addition to our toad busting and habitat box efforts, we try and capture plant and animal species on iNaturalist. Now the Australian version is better trained, it's also hugely rewarding to use the Merlin app to identify bird calls, and some short recording sessions don't disappoint! Here are three small samples from near the Ashgrove Avenue bridge...

It's pretty dry out there. After only 16mm total rain July - September, the creek has stopped flowing. Fortunately there are still some good pools around. Spot the wood duck coming in to land at 10 seconds! Cross fingers for some rain soon.

Well Davidson Street Bushcare Group after the 2022 floods, in our flurry to restore the site, we may have got the "Three Mile Scrub' plinth facing the wrong way... but how gorgeous to see the sun shining through the tracing today to reveal a perfect way around 'Three Mile Scrub'!

We love bringing native vines back into our regional ecosystem, but sometimes restoration requires a bit of intervention.

Two young Queensland Silky Oak saplings are struggling. One has been bound down by a lush scrambling lily beneath a native frangipani, while another is disappearing under a native grape vine.
The vines belong here too, but our young trees need some breathing room.

Sometimes caring for the bush means knowing when to untangle it. 🌿💚

We had a fantastic working bee on Saturday afternoon behind the Ashgrove 'sanctuary', just downstream of the Ashgrove Avenue bridge.

A huge thanks to our wonderful volunteers for removing a mass of w**ds, including supersized cane grass, balloon vine, dyschoristes and Singapore daisy, so we can better manage the saplings in this area that are now gaining some height. We also did some infill planting of lomandras around saplings and planted some new trees in an area previously affected by flooding.

Today's crazy w**ding challenge at Davidson Street Bushcare Group was separating the web of invasives from the natives. Removed nasties including creeping inch w**d, Singapore daisy, balloon and glycine vines, grasses, hairy commelina, dyschoristes, billy goat w**d and a satisfying madeira vine tuber. All with the aim to create space and leave behind the native commelina, slender grape and tape vines, native grape/kangaroo vine and lomandras.

The rest of the group spent the session uncovering and re-discovering a heap of fantastoc native saplings on the creek bank. Thanks for a good session all!

It's spring alright!! Beautiful to see the Eel-tailed Catfish (Tandanus tandanus) busily tending their nests in the creek. It's best to observe them from a distance and keep dogs on a lead to help keep them safe during this important time

So wonderful seeing the Three Mile Scrub - Quandong Park bushcare group busy at work this morning on the fringes of Banks Street Reserve just upstream of our site. Thanks for your great work on regenerating the Enoggera creek corridor.
