Some days, we can soldier on through sniffles and a clogged-up sinus. Other days, we just need to be home. It's the same for children; a fever, an upset tummy, or that unmistakable feeling that something's not quite right.

When children are unwell, a quiet day with familiar comforts can help their body heal faster than pushing through in a lively environment.

As well as helping to keep our friends healthy and minimising the spread of infection, these rest days also teach children something valuable: listening to your body matters, and sometimes slowing down is exactly what health looks like.

Parent friendships often start in the car park at pick-up time. Someone else's child is also refusing vegetables. Someone else has a car full or rocks and seed pods. Someone else is navigating the same sleep regression, or the same afternoon outbursts. Someone else understands because they're in it too.

Early childhood settings create natural opportunities for these connections to form. You see the same faces at drop-off, share similar experiences, and gradually realise you're not figuring this out alone.

Parenting can feel isolating. Finding like-minded people who 'get it' matters not only for the children's wellbeing and connectedness, but also for our own.

Today marks the beginning of the 40th annual Refugee Week; a celebration born in Australia and now observed around the world! As we celebrate this milestone, we also look to the future:

How can we continue to show compassion to people in need of safety? What more can we do, as individuals and communities, to offer support, empathy, and understanding? And how can each of us show kindness and help people feel they belong?

Lady Gowrie Qld welcomes sharing of stories, challenging of stereotypes, and working together towards a more inclusive society.

How children feel in a space shapes how deeply they can learn. And how they move through their earliest years shapes everything that follows.

Lady Gowrie Queensland's Bribie Island professional development day brings these two ideas together. Dr Geraldine Harris examines how learning environments support children's curiosity, safety, and sense of place. Phoebe Marais and Natasha Sansoni explore how early movement experiences build the neurological foundations for attention, regulation, and school readiness.

This week our CEO Elizabeth Death met with the Hon Di Farmer, Shadow Minister for Education and the Early Years, to chat about all things early childhood education and care in Queensland.

It was a valuable opportunity to discuss the important role the sector plays in supporting children, families and communities, as well as some of the key opportunities and challenges facing early childhood education and care across the state.

We appreciate the opportunity to share insights from the sector and look forward to continuing conversations that help shape positive outcomes for Queensland's children and families.

What beauties!!! Children in the Koedal room at Lady Gowrie Thursday Island Child Centre are SO excited to share the flowers they have grown. Not only were these zinnias and peppers planted from seed, but the Koedal children have been watering them with recycled water from their daily water play - showing how important it is to share our precious natural resources so many can benefit. And now the bees and butterflies can benefit too! We hope the gorgeous colours brighten your whole weekend!

Cold and flu season arrives with cooler weather. Young children get sick frequently as their immune systems develop, but good hygiene habits reduce how often illness spreads.

Hand washing works better than any product you can buy. We teach children to wash hands properly at routine times such as after toileting, before and after eating, and after wiping noses. Consistent routines help build habitual hygiene practices.

We also keep spaces well-ventilated, help children learn to cough into elbows rather than on hands, and encourage outdoor play in a variety of weather (reminder to label warmer winter clothing!).

These hygiene habits help protect everyone in the family, not just the child learning them, and promote healthy bodies and lifestyles.

Most early childhood settings have routines. Far fewer have rituals, and the difference shapes how children experience their day emotionally.

Toni Christie from Childspace joins Lady Gowrie Queensland online to explore how intentional rituals support emotional wellbeing, self-regulation, and a genuine sense of belonging in early childhood settings. Educators who attend leave with practical ways to bring deeper meaning to daily moments, from arrivals and transitions to mealtimes and farewells.

The team at Kenmore District Kindergarten embraced the Wear It Yellow campaign during National Reconciliation Week. The Children's Ground initiative encourages participants to wear a touch of yellow, celebrate First Nations culture and learn about our shared histories. Money raised helps fund education and wellbeing programs for children and families, on Country and in community.
