Thank you Jacquie for opening up the conversation about conversation! Talking about stories and the vocabulary the writers intentionally use to build worlds, create characters and draw the reader in should be celebrated. Talking about stories with each other is the most important way we can signal that reading is a valued use of our leisure time. If young people are talking to each other about stories then we have the peer to peer talk needed for a vibrant reading movement.

This is important research and opens up thoughtful considerations. At the CBCA we particularly want to add how incredibly powerful it is to add an author or illustrator visit to your Shadow Judging: Book of the the Year program. We have found the young people benefit from discussing with a creative, not necessarily the author or illustrator of the book they are judging, the process and intent of the creative, and drawing out how this intent has translated into the quality of the story. The creatives attending a Shadow Judging: Book of the the Year program group, have commented on how this is a two-way benefit, they can hear first hand how the audience receives the story, and are impressed with the level of discussion our criteria elicits among the young readers. Our young participants develop an aspiration to be a writer or illustrator.

We are proud to announce that we are working with The Children's Book Council of Australia to promote their 2024 Book of the Year Awards, which is widely recognised as the most prestigious children's literature awards.

The CBCA recognises the quality of some of Australia's most creative people and celebrates powerful, polished and professionally produced books that enrich the imaginations of young readers.
