Today the Australian Aphasia Association (AAA) joins aphasia organisations around the world in marking International Aphasia Day, led by the Association Internationale Aphasie (AIA).

This year’s message — “We lose our words, not our intelligence” — highlights the most common misconception about aphasia: that communication difficulties reflect cognitive ability. They do not.

Aphasia affects more than 140,000 Australians, most often after stroke. It impacts speaking, understanding, reading, and writing, but intelligence is not affected. Misunderstanding this reality leads to exclusion in healthcare, employment, emergency situations, and everyday life.

AAA is calling on Australians to learn about aphasia, modify their communication, and challenge misconceptions about aphasia. Small changes — speaking slower, writing things down, giving people time — make a profound difference.
