Scams Awareness Week **officially runs 24–28 August 2026** across Australia. It’s coordinated nationally by Scamwatch (ACCC), with support from government agencies, banks, telcos, and community organisations — including Rotary clubs.

**2026 Theme: “No one’s just a number”**

The focus this year is on:
- Recognising that every scam victim is a real person
- Encouraging people to slow down before acting
- Promoting verification of identity and legitimacy
- Highlighting how small moments of hesitation can prevent major losses

**Top scam types highlighted this week**
- Phishing & impersonation scams** (ATO, myGov, banks, parcel delivery)
- Redirection scams -targeting invoices and payments
- Romance & friendship scams -exploiting emotional vulnerability
- Investment scams - using fake crypto platforms or guaranteed returns
- AI‑generated deepfake scams (a major 2026 focus)

Key message-
- **Stop** — Don’t rush when contacted unexpectedly
- **Check** — Independently verify the source
- **Protect** — Report, block, and secure accounts quickly
