As President of the St Philip Syriac Association (San Filippo), I feel truly honoured and humbled to be part of something so special.
In only our third year our Feast Day celebrations and fundraising lunch was a wonderful success and I am proud to share that this year we raised and donated $12,000 to the Queensland Brain Institute.
That is something we should all be very proud of and a heartfelt THANK YOU to everyone who attended, to all our sponsors and supporters and especially to my committee for their hard work, commitment and dedication. As volunteers none of this happens without people giving their time, energy and heart and what makes it all worthwhile is knowing that we have been able to contribute to important research that will make a real difference in people’s lives.
The feedback from the day has been truly humbling. So many people have spoken about the atmosphere in the room, the welcome, the laughter, the friendship and the genuine feeling of community. That is what made the day so special.
For myself and our Committee one of the most meaningful parts of the day was having Paolo Gatto with us. Paolo comes from the town of Calatabiano (in Sicily) where he has had the honour of being a 'portatore', one of the men who carries the statue of San Filippo during the traditional celebrations in Sicily. For the men of Calatabiano, this is one of the greatest honours of there lives.
His passion, emotion and love for San Filippo was felt by us all. Paolo brought with him not only stories and memories from Sicily, but also special memorabilia gifted to us by his fellow 'portatore' (his brothers in San Filippo), which meant so much to us as a committee. His presence truly added something extra special to the day.
We are grateful to have met Paolo and look forward to his ongoing connection with our Association as we continue to honour traditions that have been carried on in Sicily for over 270 years.
Celebrating San Filippo and doing charitable work in his name is what we will continue to do.
Thank you all for making this year’s celebration such a memorable and meaningful success.
Viva San Filippo!
