As Youth leaders of AAA, we have a number of goals for this page that we would like to achieve in order to create a safe, inviting and interconnected community. We want to be able to educate our community about the different customs and values that we perhaps all share but also differentiates us. We want to share stories to spotlight the issues surrounding Asian hate and most importantly crea

te bonds with all of you so that if there is ever a time when anyone needs help you are not afraid to reach out. We want to also breakdown the barriers of generational trauma that some of us may be burdened with and be able to communicate openly with no judgment. Lastly, of course, we want to have a laugh together and share memes that no one in our families would understand.♥︎

Day #3
Today as an Asian... we not only bring up racism outside of Asians, we have to talk about generational trauma. How far does it really go? When and where can we stop and pinpoint the exact moment that started the pressure and internalised self-racism and criticism? Being compared to by your siblings, your cousins, people who's names don't even matter to you, yet they become the building block to your insecurity. How many of you put other people's opinions and judgements about yourself ABOVE yourself? That's the fear.

A little extra quote for this one: "Heal the root so the tree is stable" - unknown

Day #2
Today as an Asian… I have begun accepting my failures. I have failed so many times. Yes, I’m talking about grades, you could almost say I convinced people who knew me that I wasn’t academically inclined. But for some reason, people still believed I was even when I proved over and over again that I wasn’t. I failed maths more than I can count, I failed chemistry, I failed physics, I failed algebra, I failed calculus, I basically failed the A-sians. I failed so many times that during exams I would purposefully scribble on questions rather than try to answer them so I could get away with the internal humiliation. I felt like a complete imposter, as a student and as an Asian, like I didn't deserve to even be Asian.

You're not dumb, you can't BE dumb and no one has the right to judge your mental capability. This problem stems down far back to family generational trauma and stereotypes placed on us. There's no issue with being complimented as smart but when it's because of your race, and when ONLY YOU feel like you don't live up to a standard? That's self-hate and confusion coming from racism and Asian expectations.

Day #1
Today as an Asian… being born and bred in Australia means having a back pocketbook of answers to unsolicited questions about who you are. Unsolicited like those unsolicited 🍆 pics – it comes out of nowhere, it’s disturbing, you’re shocked for a solid couple of seconds (or minutes) and your mind races to think of a response. Being asked, “where are you from?” and responding with, “Australia”, which then HAS to be followed up with, “no, where are you REALLY from?”. What? You’re confused? I’m just as confused as you are. While yes, some people genuinely are not trying to offend, the underlying negative connotation it presents is right there – feeling like you don’t belong. You’re. Not. Australian. Enough.

It's hard to not let comments like these get to you, especially when they happen on a regular basis. You don't need to divulge your "actual" nationality and if the guessing game is played where they list every single Asian country - give them the most disappointed look possible. We know it'll be a good one.

New report which will be released by Diversity Arts Australia soon shows that:

"Over 79% of respondents said they have lost or expected to lose income as a result of COVID, with a staggering 85% of First Nations respondents indicating they had lost or expected to lose income due to COVID."

"Over 53% of respondents reported they had experienced racism prior to the COVID-19 pandemic and of those, over 72% believed racism to have gotten worse during the COVID-19 context."

We’re two years into a global pandemic, where cancellations, lockdowns and lost opportunities have had a devastating impact on the creative sector. Our 2020 survey on lost work and wellbeing of creatives of colour, showed that culturally and linguistically diverse (CaLD) artists were hit harder .....

Hey fellow Asian-Australians! After some deep mental digging and brainstorming, we are excited to start a new segment of weekly posts from tomorrow titled "Today As An Asian..." where we'll be deconstructing model minority myths and what it really feels like as millennials growing up in Australia.

We want to start conversations about hope and healing, so we encourage you to share what you love/hate about your experiences between cultures, no matter where you’re from!
As Mr Li Shang once said, "Let's get down to business".

G’day everyone!! It’s been a long while since this page has been active, but we thought – why not be spontaneous and revamp it up a bit? Because being spontaneous doesn’t happen in our Asian households 🤙 Jokes aside, there just aren’t enough representatives of the Asian Australian community and we want to celebrate the diverse Asian cultures present within our little piece of earth – Australia.

We can’t wait to get to know you guys and continue spreading awareness regarding detrimental issues within our society. As old members of AAAYL – hello again and to new members – welcome!!
