Flying Arts celebrated its 55th Anniversary at Government House last Wednesday, marking an important milestone in the organisation’s history. It was a wonderful opportunity to gather with corporate leaders, artists, supporters, and friends of Flying Arts, both past and present, to reflect on and celebrate the journey so far.

Founded 55 years ago by artist and visionary Mervyn Moriarty OAM, Flying Arts was built on the belief that art emerges from the relationships between people and place.

Today, that vision continues to guide Flying Arts as it champions the arts across regional and remote Queensland, supporting creative communities to thrive and re-imagine what is possible in the outback and beyond.

The evening also featured a special exhibition honouring Merv’s legacy and the history of Flying Arts.

Thank you to our Board: Lorraine Dinsey, Jan Manton, Lynn Rainbow-Reid AM, Fraser Power, Michael Clarke, Trent Forno, Rebecca McDuff, Pat Murphy

Thank you to Partners and Supporters of Flying Arts: Arts Queensland, Tim Fairfax Family Foundation, Consolidated Properties Group, Qantas, QUT (Queensland University of Technology), TAFE Queensland, Griffith University

Thank you to the brilliant team at Government House for hosting us.

Join us at Government House this Queensland Day for a special exhibition celebrating the legacy of our founder Mervyn Moriarty OAM and the history of Flying Arts.

It has been fantastic to sift through our archives to discover the journey of our business. Merv's son, Andrew Moriarty joined us for a special interview, sharing memories of his father's passion for arts education.

"He would be so delighted that there are still people working in the organisation he started all those years ago, with just a vision and a pilots license"

We can't wait to welcome you to the exhibition this Saturday 6 June at Government House Open Day - 11am to 3pm.

Queensland Regional Art Awards (QRAA) - Art for Life Award. Alison McDonald and Flying Arts present a two-week solo exhibition at the gallery space, Festival House.

Opening Details
Date: Thursday 25 June 2026
Time: 5:00pm for 5:30pm - 7:00pm
Location: Flying Arts
381 Brunswick Street, Fortitude Valley QLD 4006

Alison’s exhibition is a continuation of her ongoing engagement with copper, taking inspiration from the seaweed collected by Annie Slade in 1884, which is now held within the British Marine Algae Collection at JCU Special Collections.

Each piece emerges from close observation of textures, patterns and structures found in seaweed, moss, lichen and rock. Using techniques such as chasing and repoussé, metal is reshaped into intricate forms. Progressions invites reflection on the complexity of nature, and our role within it.

We look forwarding to welcoming you. Please register here: https://flyingarts.org.au/events/qraa-art-for-life-solo-exhibition-opening-2/?utm_source=facebook&utm_medium=post&utm_campaign=qraa

Their arrival is especially timely, as we prepare for a special exhibition celebrating Merv’s legacy as part of Queensland Day celebrations at Government House.

You can visit the exhibition at Government House Open Day, 11am to 3pm on Queensland Day (6 June).

Australia’s next National Cultural Policy is being shaped right now, and regional and remote voices need to be part of it.

As the administrator of the Regional Arts Fund in Queensland, we are pleased to share this advocacy work from Regional Arts Australia

They have brought together practical tools to support submissions, including guidance, key messages and a short survey to help identify what matters most to communities.
