What could you do with $3 Billion if you didn’t spend it on a stadium rebuild?

25/02/2025

In just one month, we’ll all find out the plan for the Olympics.

But there are some Queenslanders who will find out earlier, the LNP government.

Still time to let them know that our community shouldn’t be without schools and parks.

Rethink the Gabba has never been about saying “Not in my backyard”.

It’s about thoughtful and responsible development decisions.

More schools. Not less.

When the previous government proposed rebuilding the Gabba, it came with a very big catch. East Brisbane State School can’t stay in East Brisbane.

Non-catholic parents living in suburbs like Kangaroo Point and Woolloongabba would have to wait and see whether they would be trying to walk their kids to Coorparoo or Dutton Park to go to primary school (we specify non-catholic parents because there is a Catholic school in KP). The Gabba rebuild meant less school facilities locally with more children accessing them as more apartments are built.

As more people move to the inner city suburbs, we need more schools, not less, just one reason why the Gabba rebuild doesn’t make sense.

22/02/2025

In 2021, when the IOC was looking at the idea of Brisbane hosting an Olympics, they suggested hosting the Athletics at Carrara stadium.

Everything that has happened since then with threats of schools being closed, houses torn down and green space being lost has been down to the Queensland government.

The LNP can still sway decisions about Olympics venues. They can still say no to schools being lost, houses and parks being destroyed.

19/02/2025

On 25th of March, we will learn what the Crisafulli government has planned for Olympics venues.

Whilst we can’t predict the outcome at the stage, here is what would be included in the best possible outcome.

No-one loses their home for an Olympics venue.

No school loses access to a safe playground because of an Olympics venue.

No kids lose access to a place to play outside because of an Olympics venue.

Not really much to ask, is it?

We posted yesterday about the closures of Vulture and Stanley streets, so a clarification.

There has been no official announcement of how long Stanley and Vulture Streets will need to be closed for this proposed project. There is also no clarity about whether it is possible to fit in a larger North-South oriented stadium onto the narrow site without permanently narrowing those two streets.

16/02/2025

There is a bit of discussion in the news at the moment about whether the government will choose to build a new stadium for the Olympics.

So let’s be clear that a Gabba rebuild is a new stadium.

This is not a refresh of the existing building. The proposal for the Gabba is to close Vulture and Stanley Streets, close East Brisbane State School, move the Lions and the cricket, demolish the existing building and start again from the foundations up.

If anyone tries to tell you that this is a reuse of an existing facility, tell them they’re dreaming.

15/02/2025

There seems to be an idea circulating that there is a government plan to rebuild the Gabba, but retain East Brisbane State School.

If such a plan exists, the parents at East Brisbane State School know nothing about it. Evidence shows that most parents would be ecstatic to find out, so if you were in a position to tell them, you would do it.

Therefore, we can only assume that East Brisbane State School is still under threat from this nonsensical idea of a Gabba rebuild.

14/02/2025

The existing Gabba stadium already overhangs Vulture and Stanley Streets at its ends.

The people who support a Gabba rebuild are promising a bigger field of play (you need that to fit an Olympic running track), more seats and better amenities.

Where?

The site is stretched to its limits by the existing stadium. Any proposal to rebuild it needs to explain where you are going to find more space and what compromises are going to be needed to make it work.
