🌿 Griffith BioBlitz 2026 – Nathan Campus
Griffith University is inviting the community to take part in its 2026 BioBlitz on Friday 4 and Saturday 5 September.

The BioBlitz will survey the forest around the headwaters of Mimosa Creek, which flows into Bulimba Creek, providing an opportunity to help document the biodiversity found in this important local catchment.

📅 Friday 4 & Saturday 5 September 2026
⏰ 7:00 am–5:00 pm – participants can join for as much or as little time as they like

📍 Griffith University Nathan Campus, starting at the EcoCentre (Building N68)

A BioBlitz is a citizen science event where people of all experience levels help record plants, animals, fungi and other species. Participants simply download the iNaturalist app, take photos of species they find within the survey area and upload their observations.

The information collected contributes valuable data to help understand and manage the natural environment on campus.

Sunday working bee at Brandon Rd saw our team joined by an enthusiastic group of volunteers who we met last year at National Tree Day- families from Sri Sathya Sai International Organisation (Woolloongabba Centre)! Thanks to Pranika for coordinating the group!
100 new native plants are now safely in the ground! We also had a talk about some of the local wildlife that live in our bushcare area.
A big effort and plenty of fun!
Thanks to the Lord Mayor’s Environment Fund for our delicious morning tea!

This is what 35 years of dry rainforest revegetation looks like.

Nearly every tree in this photo was planted by hand. Much of the seed used to establish this site was generously provided by the late and greatly respected botanist Lloyd Bird. These are all slow-growing dry rainforest species, and the member responsible for this restoration has spent decades watering young plants and tirelessly battling w**ds.

The w**d pressure in this dry rainforest is relentless. Thousands of climbing asparagus seedlings carpet the forest floor, coral berry continues to emerge within the shaded area, and a new infestation of cat's claw creeper is another ongoing challenge.

Despite the constant work, every hour spent w**ding has been worthwhile. This restored patch now provides vital habitat for small birds, insects and mammals in an otherwise heavily cleared landscape. Just as importantly, the dry rainforest species are now producing seed that is naturally spreading throughout the surrounding area, helping to restore road verges, regenerate degraded remnants, and expand the reach of this endangered ecosystem.

This is what long-term commitment to restoration can achieve.

Quick check on last lot of plantings, spot of watering, and a bit of compulsive w**ding by a couple of group members today.
New grasses (Blady grass- Imperata cylindrical) and trees doing well.
Brisbane Wattle (Acacia fimbriata) starting to flower, along with blue Dianella caerulea.
