What happens when reading lessons also helps children stay safer online?

At Preah Khleang Primary School in Cambodia, Open Development Cambodia and the បណ្ណាល័យអ្នកប្រយុទ្ធ - Prayuters Library organised a reading challenge supported by the APNIC Foundation.

The activity invited students to read aloud from a Khmer text on how children use digital devices for learning, communication, and entertainment, and along the way, they also learned how to stay safe online - what personal information to keep private, how to recognise suspicious links, and when to ask a trusted adult for help.

The session showed how literacy education can connect directly with children’s everyday digital realities.

We are pleased to announce that our Building Capabilities in the Asia Pacific (BCAP) project has been selected as a WSIS Champion in the “Capacity Building” category for the WSIS Process Prizes 2026.

BCAP is among the five Champion projects in this category, with one winner to be announced on July 9, 2026, at the WSIS Forum 2026 in Geneva, Switzerland.

Thank you to everyone who voted and supported the project.

BCAP builds on years of work supporting Internet professionals across the region, bringing together training, mentorship, and globally recognised certifications into a single, scalable initiative. It is designed to address real gaps in skills, infrastructure, and local capacity.

This is an exciting recognition for a project focused on investing in people, strengthening communities of practice, and contributing to a more resilient, inclusive, and sustainable Internet ecosystem across the Asia Pacific.

Digital development and Internet ecosystems move through people, ideas, conversations, and the spaces where they meet.

Across the Asia Pacific and beyond, many important events are shaping connectivity, digital inclusion, Internet infrastructure, cybersecurity, policy, skills, and resilient digital futures.

To make these opportunities easier to find, the APNIC Foundation has created an events calendar for the wider community working in the digital and Internet development space.

The calendar is designed as a shared resource. If you know of an upcoming event that should be included, we invite you to submit the details via the form on the page. Relevant events will be added to help more people discover, attend, and contribute to wider conversations on digital development and the Internet.

Successful digital development often appears like a magazine cover.

Polished, aspirational, and effortless.

The story looks complete because the cover is designed to make progress feel visible and easily within reach.

The real story sits in the fine print: the institutions that coordinate, the regulators that clear the path, the engineers who keep networks reliable, the educators who build skills, the businesses that invest, and the community organisations that know where access still fails.

That fine print was the focus at the EmpowerTech Summit 2026 in Bangkok.

The APNIC Foundation has published the Summit Communiqué, reflecting insights from a regional dialogue that brought together governments, regulators, intergovernmental bodies, industry, chambers of commerce, the technical community, and organisations working on connectivity, cybersecurity, digital inclusion, and skills.

Together, they examined what the next phase of Southeast Asia’s digital development will require.

What will it take to build Southeast Asia’s digital future from the ground up?

In his latest article for the Bangkok Post, APNIC Foundation CEO Rajnesh Singh examines the systems that will shape the region’s next phase of digital development.

As Southeast Asia continues to make major gains in connectivity, the more challenging work lies in strengthening the policy frameworks, workforce capacity, economic models, and community engagement needed to make access meaningful, resilient, and useful.

“Scare, Aware, Care is a core cybersecurity framework promoted by the National Cyber Security Agency of Thailand to protect individuals and organisations from digital threats. It guides people to recognise threats, understand the risks and take action to secure their data.”

Air Vice Marshal Amorn Chomchoey, Secretary General of the National Cyber Security Agency (NCSA) of Thailand, outlined a practical cybersecurity framework at the EmpowerTech Summit 2026.

NCSA drives national and regional cybersecurity resilience through targeted training programs, workshops, and cyber drills. These efforts target government officials, Critical Information Infrastructure (CII) operators, and digital service enablers to cultivate sustainable security practices and incident response capabilities.

As Southeast Asia’s digital economy grows, cyber resilience must sit alongside connectivity, technical capability, and policy readiness. Each affects the strength of the wider digital ecosystem, from the safety of individual users to trust in the systems that businesses, public services and communities depend on.

At the EmpowerTech Summit 2026 in Bangkok, leaders across government, industry, technical and development communities are examining the choices that will define the region’s next phase of digital progress. Stay tuned for more insights from the Summit.

“Problem-solving starts with problem identification, and when it comes to capacity building, everyone sees the problem differently” - Rajnesh (Raj) Singh, CEO of the APNIC Foundation, at EmpowerTech Summit 2026, on why digital development conversations need evidence from every level: policy, technical operations, industry, and communities.

EmpowerTech Summit 2026 brings those perspectives into one room, grounding regional priorities in evidence from the field.
