What a great morning bringing local businesses together for ecoBiz’s Cost Reduction and Innovation event in Brisbane.

Attendees heard new ways to improve efficiency and innovate from Petroh Daczynski (Westside HQ), who shared insights from a local business perspective, and Sarah Woolmington, who provided examples from her work as an ecoBiz coach.

The hands-on workshop sparked some great conversations, with participants sharing ideas, challenging thinking and uncovering new opportunities. One standout takeaway? Shifting the mindset from seeing waste as a problem to seeing it as a future resource.

It is clear Queensland businesses are looking for simple, achievable ways to build resilience and long-term value, and this is exactly what ecoBiz is here to support.

Thank you to everyone who joined us and contributed to such a valuable discussion.

This morning our Board Chair Tony Schiffmann and CEO Heidi Cooper hosted a breakfast roundtable bringing together our valued business partners for an intimate discussion on the drivers and barriers impacting Queensland’s economy.

With a range of different industries represented in the room, such as tech, finance, education, law, energy, banking, and more, several consistent topics of interest arose, including:

➡️ Balancing the opportunities AI and digitisation presents with considerations around safe adoption, data sovereignty and cybersecurity.
➡️ The critical role of leadership, communication, and people skills in enabling businesses to capitalise on new technologies.
➡️ How traditional education models, including universities and on-the-job mentoring, are being impacted by changing workforce habits and emerging skill requirements, both soft and technical.

We look forward to continuing these discussions and working on behalf of our partners, members, and the broader Queensland business community to mitigate the challenges and ensure our state is in the best position to capitalise on the enormous opportunity ahead.

Thank you to everyone who joined us today and in particular to our corporate partners BDO Australia for hosting the event.

Business Chamber Queensland CEO Heidi Cooper spoke with Loretta Ryan and Craig Zonca on ABC Radio last week about the impact of raising the minimum wage by 4.75%, noting the increase comes as businesses are already navigating a complex operating environment.

While wage increases are important for supporting workers, an above-inflation adjustment adds further cost pressures for many operators.

Listen to the chat with Loretta and Craig below.

It was great to be on the Gold Coast yesterday, hosting our half-day program Ahead of the Game to help local businesses build capability, sharpen their competitive edge and position themselves for growth.

As Queensland enters a period of rapid economic development, with new opportunities emerging across infrastructure, film and TV, and tourism, the conversation for businesses needs to go beyond tenders and contracts and focus on what comes next.

At the event, it was clear that the next decade provides an opportunity to reshape how we work, collaborate and position ourselves on the global stage.

Hearing from John Warn from Experience Gold Coast, Schuyler Weiss from Bazmark, Laura Maxwell from News Corp and Dominique Lamb from Brisbane2032, one message came through strongly: success will depend on how well we work together. The scale of the opportunity is simply too big for any one organisation to tackle alone. Partnerships, collaborations and unexpected alliances will be what set businesses apart.

There was also a strong sense of urgency. The businesses that will thrive in the next decade are the ones who are already preparing by identifying skills gaps, investing in capability, and building the systems they’ll need to deliver at scale. Just as importantly, they’re building networks now, not later.

Perhaps most importantly, there was a reminder to think bigger than events such as Brisbane 2032. The real goal isn’t just to be part of the “circus” while it’s in town, but to ensure businesses are stronger, more connected and more competitive long after it leaves.

A big thank you to our event series sponsors who supported us yesterday and as we roll out the Ahead of the Games series across Queensland – Australian Made Campaign, Constant Contact and Gold Coast Bulletin. Thanks also to The Fair Co. and Ruby Fox for hosting workshops on the day.

What does sustainability look like for a creative small business? 🌱
For POMO, sustainable thinking was already deeply embedded in their work. But through ecoBiz, the team found a way to formalise and strengthen those practices into a clear decision-making framework across the business.

From designing award-winning spaces like Palmwoods Town Square to achieving ecoBiz Gold Micro Star Partner status, their journey shows how sustainability can evolve from intuition into structure, strategy and long-term impact.

ecoBiz helped validate existing work, provide practical tools and create a framework that supports sustainable thinking at every stage, without adding unnecessary complexity.

For small businesses wondering where to start, or how to take the next step, this one is worth the read.
