Vale Iain Bruce
Former President of the Queensland Highland Pipers Society (1971-74) and author of "Silver Chanters", the story of the first 25 years of the Society, published in 1990, Iain was a Queensland Piper of note.
He was taught first by the legendary Jimmy Lawrie, turn-cock at the water tower at Paddington and the most notable piping teacher in Brisbane in the pre and post WWII era. Later Iain received extensive tuition in Piobaireachd from Donald MacKinnon, who had a Scottish piping pedigree second to none.
Iain went on to become a significant solo competitor and also played in top Brisbane bands such as the Red Hackle and the Queensland Irish in their heydays. He was also a respected judge of solo playing, both light music and Piobaireachd, and Pipe Bands.
With all of that Iain was a fine friend to many in the piping world, a source of wise counsel and a great source of knowledge about the Great Highland Bagpipe and its music.
He also had a successful career as a lecturer and later a Professor at the University of Queensland at its Lawes campus.
Iain died on 6 June in Toowoomba and his funeral will be at St Theresa's Parish Centre, 55 Curzon Street, Toowoomba, on Monday 15 June at 11, followed by interment at the Garden of Remembrance. He was 87 years old. Our thoughts are with his daughter Morag and her family at this time. Iain's wife Doreen, who was also an important figure in Queensland piping circles as an administrator, predeceased him by many years.
