🐰Think Easter is just chocolate eggs?
🇩🇪 Germany does Easter a little differently.
Some traditions go back centuries. Others are… honestly a bit wild...
🔥 Osterfeuer (Easter fires)
Across Germany, huge bonfires are lit on Easter weekend. Originally meant to drive away winter, today they bring whole communities together around fire, food and friends.
🎡 Osterräderlauf (Easter wheel run)
Yes, this is real. Giant wooden wheels filled with straw are set on fire and rolled down a hill at night. Sparks flying everywhere, crowds watching in awe. Spring officially wins. 🥵
🐎 Osterreiten (Easter ride)
In eastern Germany, hundreds of riders in black coats and top hats move from village to village on horseback, singing hymns. A tradition dating back to the 15th century and still practised today.
💧 Osterwasser (Easter water)
Collected in total silence before sunrise.
It’s believed to bring beauty, health and protection. But if you talk on the way, it loses its power. 🤫
🥚 Eierpecken (egg tapping)
Two eggs - one survives. Sounds simple, but people take this VERY seriously. Yes, there are strategies (the pointy-er egg usually wins). 😉
🎢 Eierkullern (egg rolling)
Roll (not throw) your egg down a hill. If it breaks, you’re out. Simple, slightly chaotic and veeery competitive. 😁
🐰 Osterhase (Easter Bunny)
Also German! Originally, it wasn’t even a bunny but a hare (wild, not cuddly). Over time, it softened into the friendly Easter Bunny chocolate version we know today.
Be honest…
