SOMETHING NEW IS COMING TO HBQ MEMBERSHIP!

We’ve been busy behind the scenes creating a brand-new online membership area for our HBQ community members and birthworker members!

We want HBQ membership to be more than simply supporting the work we do. We’re building a space filled with practical information, resources, connection and benefits to support you on your homebirth journey — or in your work supporting homebirthing families.

Inside our growing membership area, you’ll find things like:

• Recommended homebirth books, podcasts, films and resources
• Information to help you explore your homebirth options
• Access to HBQ Homebirth Circles and community connection

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY: COMMUNITY & CIRCLES COORDINATOR

Are you a people person who loves bringing people together and building community? 💜

Homebirth Queensland is looking for a Community & Circles Coordinator to help us grow and strengthen our HBQ community across Queensland.

At the heart of this role is a simple goal: helping families find their way into the HBQ community and supporting our Circle Facilitators to create thriving local communities.

Our HBQ Circles are local, in-person gatherings where homebirthing families can connect, find support and build relationships with others who understand this journey.

This is a brand-new role for HBQ, and we want you to help us shape it! We have lots of ideas about what this role could become, but we’re looking for someone who can bring their own ideas, initiative and creativity and really make the role their own.

You’ll help:

• Support and regularly check in with our Circle Facilitators
• Train and welcome new facilitators
• Promote upcoming Circles and help grow attendance
• Create Facebook events and coordinate Circle promotion
• Help facilitators grow their local communities
• Identify areas where new Circles are needed
• Reach out to families, birth workers and local communities
• Help new families find their closest Circle and get involved
• Keep our facilitators connected, supported and resourced
• Bring community ideas and needs back to the HBQ team

We’d love someone who is proactive, organised, reliable, a great communicator and genuinely loves connecting with people. You’ll need capacity for up to 5 hours per week, familiarity with the homebirth community and availability to attend our monthly HBQ team meetings.

You’ll have training, resources and the support of the HBQ team behind you as we build this role together.

HOW DO I FIND A HOMEBIRTH MIDWIFE IN QUEENSLAND?

If homebirth is something you’re considering, start looking for your midwife early. Really early!

You don’t even need to be pregnant yet.

Follow local homebirth midwives on social media, get to know their philosophy and approach to birth, and start getting a feel for who you might connect with.

A few tips:

• Connect before you conceive if you already know homebirth is something you want
• Follow midwives on socials and get a feel for their values, personality and approach
• Ask other homebirth women who their top picks are and why
• Reach out and have conversations with several midwives, finding the right fit matters
• Once you see those two lines, get in touch early!

In many areas of Queensland, private midwives can book out incredibly early, sometimes around conception or very early pregnancy. Don't assume you need to wait until you're 8, 12 or 20 weeks to start looking.

And we’ve made finding them a whole lot easier!

SO, YOU’RE INTERESTED IN A HOMEBIRTH…

Maybe you’ve only just started thinking about homebirth, or perhaps you already know it’s the path you want to explore. Either way — where do you start?

Here are a few great next steps:

• Start learning about your homebirth options in Queensland
• Connect with a Private Midwife and start having conversations about your care
• Learn about physiological birth and what homebirth can look like
• Talk with your partner and explore what you both need to feel informed and supported
• Hear the experiences of other homebirth families
• Find your local HBQ Homebirth Circle

Our Homebirth Circles are relaxed, in-person gatherings held in different areas across Queensland. They’re a place to connect, ask questions, meet other families and be surrounded by people who understand homebirth.

And you absolutely don’t need to have decided on a homebirth to come along. If you’re curious, exploring your options or simply want to learn more, you’re welcome. 💜

Sometimes the best first step is simply finding your community.

HBQ IS LOOKING FOR A SOCIAL MEDIA COORDINATOR

We’re looking for someone special to join the Homebirth Queensland team and help us grow, nurture and connect with our online community. 💜

This is a volunteer role for someone who is excited to muck in, take ownership of the role and become an active part of HBQ.

Our ideal person is already familiar with the homebirth community and understands the conversations, challenges, celebrations and information that matter to homebirthing families. Knowing our community is such an important part of creating content that genuinely connects.

You don’t need to come in knowing everything. You’ll be supported with:

• HBQ branding guidelines
• Canva templates that can be adapted and reused
• An overview of the types of content we’d like to share
• Training and guidance as you settle into the role
• A supportive committee and team behind you
• Plenty of existing HBQ content and resources to draw from

We’re looking for someone who:
✨ Has around 5 hours per week to contribute
✨ Is willing to take the time to learn the role
✨ Is comfortable creating and scheduling social media content
✨ Understands (or is deeply familiar with) the homebirth community
✨ Can work independently while also collaborating with our team
✨ Is proactive, reliable and happy to jump in where needed
✨ Wants to help HBQ educate, advocate, connect and grow
✨ Can attend a monthly online team meeting

It simply asks us to respect that each woman is the expert in her own life.

The number one reason for a caesarean is a previous caesarean. Without genuine support for VBAC, many women find themselves on a path of repeat surgery, even when another option could be possible.

With 76% of women having a repeat caesarean in 2023, it’s clear VBAC is being treated as unusually risky. This reflects system culture, not evidence.

That’s why Homebirth Queensland has strongly advocated for VBAC women not to be excluded from homebirth. Every woman deserves to make informed decisions about her care, VBAC should be no exception.
