QDN hosted an event to celebrate National Reconciliation Week (NRW) 2026 and the theme of “All In”.

Indigenous leaders and others from across the disability sector came together to hear from amazing speakers and connect with others at this important event.

QDN recognises and celebrates the important role that First Nations people with disability have and continue to play in the community by sharing their stories and culture.

The dates for NRW remain the same each year; 27 May to 3 June. These dates commemorate two significant milestones in the reconciliation journey – the successful 1967 referendum, and the High Court Mabo decision respectively.

A moving Acknowledgement of Country was delivered by Uncle Willie Prince who is a proud Kalkadoon man, storyteller and athlete who carried the Paralympic Torch during 2000 Olympics. Uncle Willie has also represented Queensland eleven (11) times in wheelchair racing, shot put and discus and is a Life Member of QDN.

Uncle Paul Calcott is a Wiradjuri Artist whose works are on loan to QDN and displayed in the QDN office and relate to the United Nations Convention on the Rights of People with Disability (UNCRPD). Uncle Paul and his colleagues will be attending the United Nations in New York next week to celebrate 20 years of the UNCRPD.

Hannah Marai spoke about her role at the Human Rights Commission, the importance of cultural connection and growing up as a granddaughter of Eddie and Bonita Mabo.

There was also a special moment when Uncle Paul presented Hannah with an original artwork that he painted for her grandmother Bonita Mabo when she was to meet Oprah Winfrey. The painting represents two strong black women coming together from across the sea and sharing their cultures.

This was a great event to connect with others through culture and art, and to celebrate the National Reconciliation Week theme of “All In”.

Accessible homes don’t just benefit people with disability; they also support ageing Australians, families, and future tenants and buyers.

Small Changes, Big Difference is a campaign which provides clear guidance on how accessibility modifications can be requested and installed in private rentals, and how property owners can adopt best practice.

You can check out the campaign and even share the materials yourself at this link: https://qdn.org.au/home-mods/

This is how property owners, investors, and property managers can play a critical role in making rental housing more accessible, inclusive, and respectful.

Developed by Queenslanders with Disability Network (QDN) in collaboration with people with lived experience of disability, The REIQ, industry representatives, the Department of Housing and Public Works (DHPW), and other key industry peak bodies, the campaign promotes consistent and accurate guidance across the sector.
