Celebrating our legendary gum trees!
There’s no better way to celebrate a 101-year birthday for Sherwood Arboretum than with a special planting day for Australia’s most famous tree species.
Brisbane Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner joined an enthusiastic group of young ‘green thumbs’ this week for National Eucalypt Day at the Arboretum.
Students from Sherwood, Graceville and Oxley State Schools and St Aidan’s Anglican Girls’ School pitched in to help the Lord Mayor plant a ‘near endangered’ Plunkett Mallee tree and also add several hundred ground cover plants to the Arboretum’s home to gum trees, the Eucalypt Ridge.
With trees such as the Tallowwood, Moreton Bay Ash, Spotted Gum and Grey Iron Bark, the Eucalypt Ridge showcases this remarkable tree species which make up nearly three-quarters of Australia’s native forests.
Just 12 months ago this month, Sherwood Arboretum, Brisbane’s unique home to more than 1000 Australian native trees, marked its centenary with a civic event and community picnic hosted by Brisbane City Council.
The addition of new ground cover plants is the latest stage of a project by Brisbane Botanic Gardens to improve both the growing conditions for the existing eucalypt trees and also provide food and shelter for the Arboretum’s wonderful wildlife
