June is Pride Month, an opportunity to celebrate the strength, diversity and contributions of LGBTQIA+ communities and to reflect on the importance of creating environments where everyone feels safe, respected and valued.

For children and young people, a sense of belonging can make a profound difference. Research consistently shows that inclusive and supportive communities contribute to better wellbeing, stronger connections and improved life outcomes.

At PeakCare, we believe every child and young person deserves to feel seen, safe and supported for who they are.

This week's Fair Work Commission decision to increase minimum award wages by 4.75% comes at a time when many community service organisations are experiencing growing demand, workforce pressures and rising operating costs.
Queensland's child and family sector relies on a skilled, dedicated workforce to support children, young people and families experiencing vulnerability. Ensuring workers are appropriately valued is critical to attracting and retaining the people our communities depend on.
As organisations begin considering the implications of this decision, PeakCare will continue working alongside QCOSS and sector partners to advocate for funding and indexation arrangements that reflect workforce costs and support the long-term sustainability of community services.
We know many organisations will be assessing what these changes mean in practice. We encourage members to share any emerging impacts, concerns or insights with us as we continue to advocate for a strong, sustainable sector.

The Fair Work Commission has released its provisional decision on the Gender-based Undervaluation Priority Awards Review for the SCHADS Award.

The proposed reforms would introduce a new classification structure for SCHADS Award employees, replacing several existing classification systems and creating a new framework for classifying roles across social and community services, disability home care and crisis accommodation services.

If finalised, the changes would be implemented in stages from October 2026 and October 2027, giving some organisations very limited time to understand the implications and prepare for transition this year.

For many organisations, the proposed reforms may have implications for workforce planning, role classifications, remuneration structures, industrial compliance and future funding requirements. The Commission is currently seeking feedback on the provisional decision before final determinations are made.

Today, PeakCare Chief Executive Officer Kelly Jebb joined many of the sector and broader community at the Queensland Attorney-General's address to the Queensland Media Club.

Speaking directly to the opportunities and commitments of the Crisafulli Government to keep children safe, the Attorney-General announced $250 million investment in a nation-first safeguarding agency – the Queensland Protection Commission.

Focussed on delivering the recommendations of the In Plain Sight report and complementing the Commission of Inquiry recommendations, the new Commission will bring together:

✅Working with Children Checks
✅Disability Worker Screening
✅Child Safe Standards
✅Reportable Conduct Scheme
✅Intelligence hub

PeakCare supports the Queensland Government's commitment to keeping children safe and implementing the recommendations of the In Plain Sight report.

This Foster and Kinship Care Week, we recognise and celebrate the incredible foster and kinship carers across Queensland who open their hearts, homes and lives to children and young people.

Carers provide far more than a place to stay. They offer safety during uncertainty, stability during change, and the relationships that help children feel connected, valued and supported. They walk alongside children and families, helping to maintain important connections to family, culture, community and identity.

Hear from PeakCare Chief Executive Officer and foster carer, Kelly Jebb, as she shares her family's fostering journey and reflects on the challenges, rewards and profound privilege of caring for children and young people.

As Kelly shares, fostering is not about replacing family, it's about extending it, creating a sense of belonging, advocating for children when they need it most, and helping them find their own voice.

To every foster and kinship carer across Queensland, thank you! Your compassion, dedication and commitment make a lasting difference in the lives of children, young people and families every day 💚

Queensland has received one of the most significant reviews of its child protection system in more than a decade.

Today, the Queensland Child Safety Commission of Inquiry From Pressure to Purpose report was tabled in Parliament, following extensive consultation with the sector, children, young people, families, carers, workers, and communities across the state.

The report paints a clear picture: Queensland's child protection system is under immense pressure, and meaningful change will require more than incremental reform. It calls for a renewed focus on prevention, stronger support for families, greater accountability and better long-term outcomes for children and young people.

For the child and family sector, this is a pivotal moment.

The real measure of success will not be the publication of the report itself, but whether its recommendations translate into lasting improvements in the lives of children, young people and families.

PeakCare welcomes the opportunity this presents to reshape the system around what matters most, the safety, wellbeing, and future of Queensland's children.

We look forward to working with our members, Government, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, community-controlled organisations, and sector partners as the next chapter of reform begins.

On 3 June each year, Australia marks Mabo Day, the commemoration of Eddie Koiki Mabo and the landmark 1992 High Court decision that recognised Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples’ traditional rights to land and waters.

The Mabo decision overturned the legal doctrine of terra nullius, a concept that claimed Australia was “land belonging to no one” prior to British colonisation. After a 10-year legal battle led by Eddie Koiki Mabo and fellow Meriam people from the Torres Strait, the High Court recognised that native title did exist under Australian law, a decision that became one of the most significant legal rulings in Australia’s history.

Mabo Day is an opportunity to reflect on truth, justice, recognition, and the enduring strength and leadership of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

Our friends at Life Without Barriers have also shared a helpful resource, “Six facts you need to know about Mabo Day”, for those wanting to learn more and deepen their understanding.

Changes to sleepover provisions under the SCHADS Award are now in effect.

These changes may impact overnight support arrangements, rostering, payroll practices and workforce planning across parts of the community services sector.

For organisations delivering overnight care and support, now is an important time to review the updated provisions and consider any operational implications for teams and services.

The Fair Work Ombudsman has developed information and guidance to support employers and workers in understanding the changes.
