We know that health consumers care deeply about prevention and public health and bring valuable lived experience insight into how these efforts can be most effective.

Ahead of World No To***co Day on Sunday, we’re recognising the people, programs and public health action helping reduce the harms caused by to***co and ni****ne products.

Australia has often been a world leader in to***co control, from plain packaging laws to prevention campaigns and community-led programs like Tackling Indigenous Smoking, which supports culturally informed local action in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.

There is still more work to do, but continued investment in prevention, public health and community-led approaches will help protect the health of current and future generations.

On National Sorry Day, Health Consumers Queensland acknowledges the Stolen Generations and the ongoing impacts of trauma, dispossession and systemic racism experienced by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, including significant gaps in health outcomes.

We join Healing Foundation, Reconciliation Australia and communities across Australia in calling for culturally safe, accessible and affordable health, aged care and healing services.

We are committed to action through partnering with First Nations health consumers and organisations to help drive change across Queensland’s health system.

Help shape what Health Consumers Queensland focuses on next.

Our Annual Survey is now open! See first comment for link. We’d love to hear from you about:
• what’s working well and where we could improve
• what support, resources or training you need most from us.

Your feedback will help shape what we focus on over the next year, from the way we communicate and engage with our community, to the training, resources, services and advocacy work we deliver.

If we share survey findings publicly, we’ll only use combined and de-identified feedback unless you’ve given us direct permission to identify you.

The survey closes Friday 5 June 2026.

It’s National Volunteer Week and we’re celebrating the incredible people who generously share their time, insight and lived experience to help shape better health outcomes in Queensland.

Thank you to our Board, Collaborative and Network members who volunteer their voices, perspectives and passion to strengthen consumer partnership and advocacy across the health system.

This year’s National Volunteer Week theme is Your Year to Volunteer — recognising those who already contribute and encouraging others to get involved. It’s also a reminder that new volunteers have the opportunity to stand on the shoulders of those who have helped build and strengthen consumer voices over many years.

We’d love to welcome new members to the HCQ Network. Join us using the link in the first comment.

Nurses are often there for some of life’s biggest moments, helping people feel heard, informed, safe and supported through illness, recovery, uncertainty and change.

At Health Consumers Queensland, we recognise the important role nurses play in listening to consumer voices and partnering with patients and families to improve care.

To all nurses working across hospitals, community health, aged care, mental health, primary care, research, education and advocacy, thank you for the difference you make.
